My April and May hatchlings are running together now and my eyes are telling me I have about a 60/40 hatch favoring pullets. I could have used more roos for freezer camp. I've already bought the charcoal. :D
Then maybe I'll get a barred hen.. or 2. The rooster is a barred black sex link and the hen RIR. As soon as Barred Rock pullets become available next spring I want a dozen or so.
5 more to go. 7 eggs have not pipped and this late I don't think they will but I won't shut down until late tomorrow afternoon. The 5 are heavily pipped and chirping. One zipping. Looks like I'll get 34 out of 41 set. I'd like better but for a second time hatching with an incubator I've got to...
21 of 41 out of the shell with many more pipped. Looking like a good hatch in box #1. Box #2 is an accidental experiment. At some point after setting the temp control in box 2 malfunctioned and instead of a 99.5° temp that is was showing the real temp was around 94. I may have drowned them all...
I think the mystery of the black chicks is solved. My wife put in 7 of the pet eggs, eggs from free range RIR hens that free range with a black sex link rooster. He has proven himself potent. There are at least 4 black chicks this morning but it's hard to count through the little windows when...
That is a truck load of information that I can not begin to totally fathom. There were two blacks from the first hatch and now another. Whatever they are they should lay well and eat well.
#2 out of its shell is a black chick. We have no black hens or black roosters except a black sex link RIR x Barred Rock that free ranges with 3 hens that I don't use in the incubators. He has been known to eye both the Delaware Girls and the RIR Girls... I just don't see a black chick. No other...
Pip #1 is a little larger while #2 is zipping and screaming "Hello World, I'm coming so get ready".
Edit. That was quick............ Looks like we may have hatched a Delaware.
I have my first pip this morning.... It's a day early. I account for this for the eggs being a week old when going into the incubator that were held about 14° above the ideal. Then again maybe it's an over achiever.
I just put 81 eggs that are mostly Rhode Island Reds or perhaps a Delaware x Rhode Island Red cross in lock down tonight. There is also a possibility that a few could be Rhode Island Red x Delaware in the mix. From the last hatch I've got 2 chicks that are black with a spot on there heads like a...
I have a pet scissor beak that is blind in one eye. First ever for me. She loves me and comes to me where ever I am and waits for me to pick her up. It saddens me so much there is no cure for her. Eventually I'll have a little pen of misfits to care for. I may be a commercial operation but I...
In 48 hours my 82 eggs will go into lock down. I'll transfer the eggs into a second set of 41 egg incubators used as hatchers. Then I can set 82 more on Saturday evening and keep the 21 day hatching cycle going.
8 Days in and I'm not near as nervous as I was the first round. I candled 6 eggs that looked good and I'm going with what I've got and hoping for the best.
I set 82 RIR eggs from my flock to hatch on 4/15/23. I'm using 2370 Hovabators. At the 18 day mark I'll remove the eggs into 2 more 2370's without the turners and lock them down.
