That's interesting, the chick starter I use is much lower in Vitamin E than what is recommended there. My chicks have always been healthy and I can't remember ever losing one other than those who have hatched out poorly.
Wheat germ oil might be a good way to boost their vitamin E.
I always feed higher protein feed to my adult birds in the winter, due to molting and then also as a prelude to collecting hatching eggs. Once that's done I put them back on 16% figuring they can forage for extra protein via insects through the spring and summer.
Are you then going to make something with that meat, like chicken salad? 😋
Or does that come in already prepared?
One good thing about this discussion is that I found out Maryland has a new food waste law.
A lot of locations- they seem to be mostly composters
927,926 tons of food waste...
I thought so too, but it looks like they are going to give it a try!
" The partnership estimates that waste-based feed will become globally available in more than 20 countries. Chief executive officer of Food Recycle Ltd., Norm Boyle, shared the news: “We anticipate that within five years...
Actually that was the whole point of the study, to end up with something similar to what we have now, only using different sources for the ingredients. Point being they would hope to reduce food waste, lower the carbon footprint and free up more resources for human consumption.
I don't get all...
Heat does reduce the levels of some vitamins and nutrients, but nowhere near destroying almost all nutrition, otherwise those of us that cook our food before eating it would have all died from malnutrition by now ;)
Yep, you'd have to have a system in place where the food waste was picked up daily and delivered directly to the processing plant and then processed in a timely manner. It could be done but the logistics of it all would be difficult.
As far as spoilage they used-
"Steam heating to exceed 100...
I thought this study was interesting. It's a shame we don't/can't recycle more food waste into livestock feed.
Abstract - There is renewed interest in utilizing food waste as animal feed due to its potential benefits in reducing feed cost and environmental impact while improving global food...
The leading cause of maternal mortality in the US is mental health/substance abuse, followed by hemorrhage and cardiac conditions.
AA women are likely more affected since their obesity and hypertension rates are somewhere around 60%.
Many people are less healthy overall these days due to their...
I agree, the same seems to hold true for humans and I would imagine other animals as well. Studies suggest that a calorie restricted diet in humans can lead to better health and a longer life.

That's all well and good if the human is eating a decent diet but otherwise not so much. I've seen plenty of people who feed their dogs leftover boxed mac and cheese, chickens nuggets and such. That's not fit for anyone or anything.:(
I agree, I was referring to more to genetic maladies rather than physical attributes.
The problem is that's what a lot of people want today, big eyes, domed heads, smooshed faces. Oh they're so cute!  That's why the #1 most popular dog right now is the French Bulldog...
I remember that from when I was a little kid, Ken-L-Ration biscuit and horse meat. Although we didn't feed that, we used Bench and Field.
Not so much selective breeding itself, as much as irresponsible selective breeding. The proliferation of certain health issues in a breed is often caused...
I don't either  Personally it's hardly a hot button topic for me. I feed a combination of commercial feed and fresh foods and see the advantages and drawbacks to both.
Did someone piss in your cornflakes this morning? :lau
I very seldom discuss anything that I don't already know something about. Please show me where I often acknowledge that I don't know anything about what I'm saying. 🤣
I'm just sharing my thoughts on a topic that was brought up (by you) is...
Animals DO evolve over time to suit the diet that is available to them.
Although egg production is no doubt the main focus of their selective breeding, I'm sure there are many other things that are taken into consideration as well, such as vitality and ability to deal with the circumstances...
Certainly better quality eggs, but it could be after so many generations of selective breeding the commercial layers have evolved to do better on the commercial feed, as much as the diet has been tailored specifically for them.
Mine eat some everyday too, in the afternoon and don't hack it up, although sometimes they gag a bit. Who knows :idunno
Or maybe they are just flossing their teeth 😂
I believe the nutritional value of grass changes throughout the year, depending on the season, temperature, rainfall, type and maturity of the grass. Maybe that's why it's more attractive at certain times?
As for dogs, since they are not obligate carnivores, could be they just need a little...
