I'm back to poultry nutrition with a question that may seem a bit out of subject for the thread, but I promise there is a link if you read to the end. We are getting very warm weather now which I think for many poultry keepers has been the case for some time. Before I discovered BYC, I gathered...

I'm very willing to give them some, maybe a bit once a week, but I don't think I would see results before a long time. And if we change their feed to whole grains + peas in the meantime I guess it should also impact their digestion. I agree that to have a global vision of a diet, you do need to...

Thank you for pointing that thread out. I read the beginning but had lost track of it.

Seems science is putting me wrong on milk - as someone who used to run a lot I was always told to avoid it, at least for plain, pasteurized but not fermented milk. The reason invoked was the acidifying effect (as for any sweet food, alcohol...). I hate milk so it may be the reason why I always...

Yes, they did. I trusted her for everything, the one thing we interfered in was that she had hatched in the darkest corner of the coop so when the chicks were two days old we moved the nest to a dog crate in the run. I wouldn't try having chicks completely free ranging without a broody watching...

I agree, it's very interesting and raise a lot of different points. Incidentally it mentions wood shavings as a source of fiber and I've been wondering for a few weeks why one of my hens eats some every night from the bucket where I keep those, just before roosting 😱 I've only had one hatch so...

I can agree in part with each of your individual sentence but certainly not with the implied conclusion that anecdote has more global value than science..but that is another derailing debate that I can't even see myself getting into. It's an interesting article but it leaves me with more...

Am I understanding correctly that they are pointing out an important difference between chickens in their ability to forage, and that this is not only due to breed, genetics and age, but also between individuals in a similar group? In that case I guess improving that "foraging behaviour" should...

It won't help you much since I'm in France but I have used fish meal when my hens were molting. It was sold as a molting supplement and mentioned not to use more than 10%. It's made in France (though that only means milled in France) and here was the analysis: Granulométrie 40µm à 1mm...

Oh thanks, that's very useful, I didn't think about pigeons at all though I did look at food marketed for other poultry types. They are a thing in France too, I think, but more in the north and north east. It seems like peas for pigeons would at least be sold online if I can't find them locally!

I think that's a key point both for chickens and other animals. It could be that static postures and processed food may not go well together, like they don't for humans. The way food is given out has an impact. Encouraging movement like @centrarchid. I know it's beginning to be taken into...

Is this derived from studies or from your experience? It hasn't been my experience for my cats, and for the horses I know. But my single experience isn't meaningful. I don't think there is much food to be found in nature that is as addictive as the stuff humans have invented. Sure, animals can...
