The sparrowhawks here attacked my ex-batt's once or twice before we had roosters. They would probably fly off if a hen defended itself, but most of my hens are afraid of them, even if they are bigger. One attacked Chipie once. Fortunately they are a lot more scared of humans than all the other...

Ini Mini is certainly an old lady for a chicken. I hope she does get better and can get to enjoy another spring and summer ! I suppose that at some point, if she doesn't fall sick, her age would have to catch her up. I know that some people give more antioxidants rich food to their senior...

It sounds like you have a good supportive community of neighbours.

Have you had the chance to talk about it with your neighbours, or is it just that up to now, no one has complained? Is the person that would kill him humanely for food a possibility just next week, or could it be at any time ? I know what I would do, but I think it's your decision to make and...

Here is my experience and my opinion. My smallest hen, Chipie, has never been wounded although the difference ratio is much more important (3.5 kilo to 800g) . She is a senior and very well liked by Gaston but she is clever enough to avoid him when he is giving signs that he will try to mate. It...

I don't have a definite answer, but a few things to consider. How are Pearl and Janice acting ? Are they trying to escape him and acting afraid ? Or do they seem to manage? Are you definite that you won't keep him ? If there is any chance that you will, they would need to get used to each other...

:hugs:hugs My partner and I decided to do something nice. We are going running together in the forest tonight, with our headlamps, which we haven't done in two years. Could you think of anything enjoyable for today, to cheer you up somewhat ?

Well, the "chicks" are big enough now to take care of themselves! Do you think they will still sleep in the playhouse ? Have you updated whisky's photos on Marketplace? He has grown very good looking now. Would you consider putting him in the garage at night for a little while ? My roosters...

How did it go last night ? I would not lock them out of the small coop because that may lead them to roost in a place that is even worse, like in the trees. If you want them to understand that they are supposed to sleep in the playhouse, I would put them there at night for three nights in a row...

Still no idea where he might come from ? If he always turn up at around the same time he probably isn't let out all the time. My cats who can come and go as they please are very random as to when they will go wherever !

They are both pretty hens. Does Kraai have more red/gold now or is the light ? I thought she looked more black but on this picture the second colour really shows out.

I'm so glad you found her ! Ini mini is something like the queen Elizabeth of your flock💚. Maybe it's time to give them again the habit of going a bit early in the run with some treats ?

@Molpet and @Sequel I'm very sorry too for the loss of your hens and the sweet cockerel. It seems to me like the predator load is maybe harder to deal with in the US than here. We don't have racoons, coyotes, not to mention bears, which all seem difficult (and expensive) to deter. It's too bad...

It's hard to know if she stays inside because she is still not well, or because she is feeling afraid. As long as you see her eat and drink rest and calm are probably what can help her the most now. 🤞I hope she will be progressively feeling better.

I'm glad to hear she's doing a bit better. Have you seen her walk ? Does she limp ? It's good that she's drinking and eating normally. She might need some extra protein to help her heal. Does she not sit down or lie down at all ? My chickens that are having a hard time to lay an egg tend to do...

Oh, so sorry about Black. I hope she feels better after a night home ! Give us some news how she's doing tomorrow. She's lucky to have survived the night outside and that the neighbour took the time to look for her owners. And wonderful for the shoulder!

Good that you are not in too much pain and hope the fracture heals quickly. If it were me I would take a calcium supplement just in case it helps the bone's reconstruction...you know, that thing I give to my chicken in a piece of cheese 😉 You were lucky in your bad luck then. It's been on the...

They don't sweat , no, but I thought they had different cooling mechanisms via their combs notably. Found this : https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/FIUGAD9PFJ2VDIJQCD7Q?target=10.1111/jpn.13496 Excerpt: "Body temperature is conveniently used as a marker for HS. Various reports suggested...
