My older hens are not quite as active as the younger ones. As long as they are still scratching around, eating well and come for treats I try not to worry too much. I would still keep a close eye on Ini mini but maybe it's just age.

Same here. Trappers say it costs more to get them than they can get for the pelts. A very few still trap foxes and racoons for hunting preserves and training dogs. The are sold alive. Of course they have lots of rules to follow. Now predators every where.

Maybe she had a bit of shock and was scared. Hopefully she will be back to her self as she feels more secure with her flock at home.

Yay for Ini mini! ❤️ Must be something in the air. Spring! My Cream Legbar Dixie just turned 10 yrs old in February. She has given me a few pretty blue eggs over the last couple weeks. Good shell too! :celebrate<<< for the older ladies! ❤️

I have several hens 7-11 years old. Some do not lay and some give me a random egg or so in spring. There combs and faces are bright red except during molt. They are Buff Orp, Cream Legbars, Marans, and home made Easter Eggers. All large fowl. As they get older they will take longer breaks...

I have so enjoyed following this thread. Your birds are beautiful and you take such great care of them. It is also so nice to be able to learn from each other. I would have never thought about using the cardboard rolls to monitor for mites. I've had chickens for 10 years now but always...

One thing I've noticed with my flock is that young birds seem to stay with their group. It's almost like having 2 flocks in one. After the pullets start laying they seem to mesh together more like one flock. I think these girls will work things out eventually. I just integrated 6 pullets...

If you treat with permethrin I would treat a second time in about 10 days to get any hatching mite eggs. Chickens look happy! ❤️

I'm guessing some mite eggs hatched. I would keep putting the cardboard rolls in there also since they work so well.

My chickens always let me know their disproval of any change I make. Their coop has windows all around it. Some are left partially open year round. Some are closed in the coldest part of winter. When I opened them all up in early spring, I had one young hen spend the day staring at them...
