    June 2023 Hatch-a-long

Last night we had a violent thunderstorm. When I went out to check on my broody hen she was gone and so were her eggs. No clue. There is no way to identify her in a sea of red hens in the layer house. She had a protected space down in one corner of the house where she had some privacy. A few...

I caught the broody Delaware pullets out of the rollout box after all the others had laid today and put the perch bar up blocking them from getting back in it for the night. Maybe that will help to break them. The dog crate is occupied with a big rooster right now that is in quarantine.

I'm heading out to gather eggs and see if I can modify what I started last night to protect my broody so the other hens can't disturb her. Had I finished it last night I was afraid that it might have broke her as a first time broody.

    June 2023 Hatch-a-long

My broody RIR has a lot of sisters trying to lay in the next that she made in the corner of the coop. The egg count under her is a lost cause. I just wish she would hatch 2 or 3 so she would get some mama experience and I could toss the other eggs and then begin to use those eggs from the other...

    June 2023 Hatch-a-long

I'm concerned about my broody and setting RIR pullet. She was off the nest for almost an hour late this evening. I thought that she had abandoned but when I went back to close up the coops she was back on her nest.

Looks like I need to get an incubator cleaned up and turned on and checked out. The broody RIR pullet could start hatching anytime and some of her eggs may be several days from hatching when she ups and leaves the nest. It seems other hens have added some to the pile and I didn't get the fence...

    June 2023 Hatch-a-long

My RIR broody is not in a nest box but on the ground under a mounted rollout box in the corner of a hoop coop that is used mostly for sleeping. The doors are opened for free ranging during the day as long as the weather permits and that is most days. I imagine that the broodies in the Delaware...

Somethings not right. Maybe they all need an attitude adjustment.

    June 2023 Hatch-a-long

Now I also have 3 Delaware pullets occupying a rollout nest box. Tonight I managed to rob one of them of 2 eggs that she had managed to keep from rolling out. Most likely one of hers and the pullet next to her had one she stole. By the end of the week I want another hoop coop built just for...

    June 2023 Hatch-a-long

My broody turned up missing 2 eggs. She had 11 and only 9 now. I hope it's not a snake in the coop at night. I've never seen a snake of any kind on this property but there is always that first time. For a first time pullet the little RIR sure is feisty.
