My chicks are in an outdoor pen with heat lamp. My Blob hen is roosting again. She still acts like she is broody, I have one black Mosaic hen, (She looks 100% AC but a green egg.) she is now walking around like she has invisible babies, and my blue copper maran hen is also acting broody.
I have 3 hatched from the Monday hatch. (2 to go). The momma hen is watching the other 7 that hatched. I do have one other hen that just went broody, probably jealous of the hen with the babies, even though they are separate. I think I am going to give this new broody the chicks I am currently...
For the Monday five I had 2 hatch so far...they hatched yesterday.
This is them today.
You can tell who the rooster is -haha! It is funny I hatched 10 this last week or so all mystery chicks from different farms, all were black but this little gray chick, and she was the one with the crack.
3...
I have a chick that hatched day 20, it was due on Mon. It had a crack that I nail polished. And I had to clip the umbilical cord.
Waiting on 3 more eggs.
Best not to help. If it is still in the egg, it may just be digesting egg contents, and even an egg that has pipped, the chick should kick it's own way out. You don't want to help a chick hatch too soon, it will have intesines hanging off the belly button, and will only live a few days.
any one interested in Fancy Nancy, I got her from frizzle feather farms in NC
This is her with feathers.
and her molting...
She did win last year's molt contest.
Some lady said..."You should separate her from the other hens so she doesn't get picked on." I said..."I would not do that, she is...
Back to your egg Northwoods, if that egg was day 21,
FYI I dry hatch the first 18 days...(foam incubator)
on day 16 light should not shine through the pointed end.
on day 18 lockdown egg should look like this...
a slight slope in the air cell, and a clean dark line that separates the air cell...
I had put 6 in for lockdown (due Mon.) I candled last night, and one egg looked like the egg you had (Northwoods.) I tossed it since it was a quitter, I had 5 left, but I did hear them peeping, and saw a beak in the cracked egg for internal pip. This morning one hatched. So waiting on the last 4.
It is really cute, the babies are all running about, I made sure the young ones got some water, the older chicks remembered me and ran up to my hand. She doesn't mind me touching her chicks. That is good because they will be more tame.
Momma hen BLRW, "Blob" got the 5 older chicks last night, I did put her in a bigger lay box so she would not crush a chick, in the AM I moved her to an enclosed area away from the other hens, She did end up squishing a baby, last night (this happens) it was a female black LO. Where she is now...
