There are a couple of reasons.
1. Instant translator jobs in hundreds of markets that have dealings with China in any way.
2. Not having to deal with those terrible translations from Mandarin to English in all those consumable goods we all enjoy. Especially all of our tech.
Case in point...
The top 5 languages spoken worldwide (as a primary or secondary language) In order are:
1. English
2. Mandarin
3. Hindi
4. Spanish.
5. French.
Pick any of them, you really can't go wrong.
I'd probably go with Mandarin since I already speak English and know enough Spanish to get by.
