The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

We have been processing a few things here. While the "Early Treat" tomatoes are disappointing in size the flavor is good and there are many on the plants. Trying to can them is almost like canning cherry tomatoes. Still pushing through though. From just 4 lacklustre plants we have put up 32...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

It's ok. It's all a learning experience. I am already thinking about improvement opportunities for next year. Many people around my area are having similar struggles. At least I got some production from everything I planted.

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

Looks like it's growing well! My buckets took a big hit. I have been working a LOT so not home much lately. It's been really hot. I failed to fill 4 buckets and it looks as though those are done for. While we have had "rain" it's been sparse enough to not actually water anything. Those 4...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

I would use the yogurt cup. When I did self watering strawberries in 2 liter bottles the wicking ropes were good for most of the season then failed.

I keep coming back to this and side eying my tomato plant that wasn't supposed to be a cherry tomato but definitely is. I don't even have any cherry tomato seeds here. I look forward to your results with the cutting. In my bucket set up... Those peppers are staying strong. My half barrel...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

I have found attractive giant pots at Costco in early spring without drain holes. That's what my African daisies are in on the front porch. We turned them into self watering pots. So far so good there too.

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

I have seen the videos with the automatic watering systems set up. It's intriguing but not enough to get me to do it. I would need a lot more buckets to feel compelled to set it up. I think if I were looking to set up a ton if buckets I would more likely set up big sub irrigated planters...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

The buckets are the winner by far. They only need filled about once every 2 weeks even in the extreme heat we have had. The grow bags with the same plants and same soil need watered every day and still the plants are half the size. The growing season has been abnormally dry here. I am impressed...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

This is the tomato variety I tried and am not a fan of.

A few quick pics... Tired taters. TATERS! Super happy about this. Wheelbarrow zucchini and cucumber. Tiny tomatoes. Bag pepper then bucket peppers. My not so hot jalapenos. Normally they are taller than the cages by now. This plant is 6' tall and healthy. Those sure look like...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

It rained last night. Not enough to water anything but shallow rooted plants but it RAINED! We hadn't seen more than enough to slightly dampen the sidewalk in almost 3 months! I am sure we could have done without the wind that came with it. Damage assessment will happen at first light. The...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

I too had hopes for the grow bags but the buckets are the winner so far. No I didn't add gauges/floats to the buckets. I may do that next year. I plan to take them apart so I can put larger diameter fill tubes and can add them then. The sub irrigated planters are worth the effort to put...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

I missed updating! Whew it's been a busy summer so far. We had a bad wind storm that broke about a foot off one of the bucket peppers. The rest are thriving. Even in our very high temps I have only had to refill the water in the buckets once a week. The bucket peppers are outpacing the grow...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

The reservoir holds just 1 gallon so not much really. I have some bunny activity this year. In all the years past they left my veggies alone. The squirrels really like my strawberries unfortunately. When I am refilling the buckets I am lifting/tilting a few and hear nothing slosh. I figure...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

Everything is going strong even in our very high temps. Peppers are getting bigger. Last filled the water a week ago. The potatoes are getting HUGE. It gives me hope for a decent amount. The self watering Petunias are filling in the tub nicely.

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

Ease of moving as well as fitting small spaces is a huge advantage for city folk with limited land. That was actually what sparked my interest. I like my raised beds a lot but there is unused areas where buckets can easily fit but be moved for fence maintenance or to gain more sun.

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

Yup saw it was a 10 pack. For me mine is only a success if it produces more in value than it cost to make. I am not worried about it getting off topic. I am enjoying all the ideas actually.

If only my flock of free range weeds were smaller.... I do encourage their predators to help themselves. Note to self make yard sign that says "This yard will never be weed free, but the weeds in this yard are always free!"

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

Yeesh that's expensive! I cannot devote much time to seeking out the alternative sources and thought my bucket purchase was expensive. I almost abandoned the idea altogether. The bucket cost of mine wasn't bad but the shipping nearly doubled the cost. I prefer the cheap/free options. I am...

The great 2024 wicking bucket/pot experiments

Great score on the pipes! Safe is definitely a good question. Rust is more of a concern about the pipes longevity since rust occurs in soil already. The paint looks like powder coating. Many trellis get powder coated so that seems ok but research into that would be a good idea. I do know it's...
