Meet "Metusalem"... I scrolled through local annonces and stumble upon a post of someone giving away a rooster.
As it's rather rare finding à Japanese Bantam around here I contacted the owner. Well, the new king of the coop is "Methusalem" he's a 5 years old (really battered but magnificent)...
and here some of my Millefleurs, it's still quite difficult tohatch or find birds who respect le standards color scheme, which is quite restrictive when it comes to the color pattern.
This years breeding session opens with a 50 shades of gray theme. Due to the unexpected death of my nice little black rooster (I think he've gotten in a fight with another one and broke his neck against the coop, I found him lying straight on his back, dead, a hour before he was all well) I put...
For those who are interested, I had some oddly colored wheaten mottled(?) offspring this year. I bought a light yellow mottled hen this spring and bred her to a) a eww blue mille fleur and later to an black eb-millefleur - i got a whole palet off yellow and wheaten mottled hens, not one alike...
Three little cuties hatched with some difficulties ove the last week.
A lot of eggs died on the 18/19 day, I'm not yet sure if it's a genetic problem or external factors. These luckily made it to full term.
They are from left to right 5 days, 3 days and 1 day old. One millefleur coulored, the...
On the monchrome project results have been better. I have some very nice hens and the little black rooster, who took his time to blossom will have hs own flock of black and blue hens. The goal are blacks and blues with black combs. We'll see what this will do!
So, after 6+ months, I have actually 11 hens left, 5 roosters and three young pullets.
One mille-fleur hen turned out quite nicely, her offspring will hatch in a couple of days I hope. The mille-fleur rooster has color issues, excluding him normally from breeding, but as I am currently short on...
For those who are interested, I have another thread detailing chick-down vs adult plumage:

Thank you.
I knew breeding on a small scale is more difficult than breeding à 200 eggs every year and keeping the 5 which turn out best.
This is not my approach. I needed a solid base of birds, and now I can select more vigorous. But I won't produce hundreds of birds, just to find the...
The last chicks of the year were born this week-end. Although I was convinced that all four eggs were from my mille-fleur only couple, it seems I must have mistaken at least one or even two eggs. Or the genetics of my millefleur couple is not as straight as I hoped.
Anyway, 4 cute little fluffs...
From 3 to 24 in 3 months ;)
My coop is now colored as it comes, between the mottled, several other colors have won my heart over. Black faced blacks, dark slate blues, even a brow-red, as some champagne or lemon colored... with or without mottles.
Now I have a couple of pairs being my base to...
And this is my oddly mottled young rooster. He began/tried to crow since last week and is already mounting the hens...at 9 weeks 🤭 He's a buff-colored, defiantly columbian, partridge bases blue Andalusian tiles longboat - or so ;)
I still not sure if I keep him, he has long legs, not quite the...
My first monochrome hatch is getting six weeks old this week, I tried to put them out in the main coop, but they were to timide and egressed by one of the older hens, so I got them back in to grow a bit more, before confronting the harsh life of peck order coop. ;)
The pullets are definitely a...
We are now complete... the last five chicks have hatched yesterday. I count now 28 heads in total 6 adults, 9 youngsters and 13 baby chicks.
8 in the "monochrome class" and 20 in the I the mottled section.
They have to make space in the main coop. :idunno 🤭
And now since I have decided who to...
Update on the first half of surprise eggs:
5/5 successfully hatched, one solid black, one grayish, two yellow with blue (?) and one light yellow getting already white wings (so maybe splash..or golden neck)
The last five will arrive shortly, two already pipped! They are due for today.
8 weeks into the adventure update...
The little mille-fleurs have moved successfully to the main coop, they are around 7 weeks old now, fully feathers. They enjoy the large space.
The "monochromes", 5 weeks, turn out to be a back mottled cockerel and 2 blue pullets (one surely mottled, the...
Rest in peace "Coq papy"
My dear gentlemen rooster died today of unknown cause. Within 24h he lost all is power and will. The vet said that he was nearly starved and dehydrated , although I saw him eating 48h ago, and on a regular basis before.
He got vitamin shots and was hydrated, taken in...
And speaking of the circle of life...found my not-so-old rooster this morning staggering around, having trouble to stay upright, comb very purple... he nearly fell when hopping out the coop, but went on picking the food. Got a vet appointment this evening. I hope not it's the same as JC.. this...
