I should say that the two breeds I REALLY want to get are their Creme Brabanter and Black Copper Marans. Thinking maybe another blue egg layer for my flock since blue eggs are a big hit here.

I was thinking standards for the breeds I want to get, but since I have to order 25 chicks and I want at most three different breeds (I would need to order a few of each breed to raise my chances of getting at least one female) it would be easy enough to have bantams as well. They don't have...

Is anyone near Ames willing to go in on an order from Sand Hill Preservation? I'd like to get a couple of chicks, and since minimum shipping is 25 chicks I'd have...A few leftovers. ;) They also don't sex, and since I live in town roosters aren't allowed so I'd need to find a home for the...

I ferment my feed and have a LOT less waste that way, even with the girls kicking it out of the feed pans. I also don't worry as much about their water intake, knowing that every time I feed them they're also getting water. During the summer I dump in vegetable scraps too. From what I've read...

What kinds did you get, Luda? I'm about an hour North of you. Past couple of days have been weirdly cool, but my peas are loving the reprieve.

Wow, you weren't joking when you said you were building a tank of a run! Nobody will be able to say you half-assed it, that's for sure!

::waves:: I'm in Ames! My girls have made it through two winters now just fine. The coop isn't really insulated and it's definitely not heated, but it's in a very sheltered area so it's protected from the wind and heavy snow.

Don't make the call one way or the other until you see an egg or hear a crow. I had two Light Brahma chicks, and one of them was more outgoing, got a red comb WAY earlier than the other, and was larger than the other. Both turned out to be hens, the other was just an outlier with development.

Hey City-Chickee, I'm just North of you in Ames. :) If you ever swing through I can show you my little flock.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather! My girls were super excited to roam the front lawn and snatch up any grass blades they found. Yesterday I got five eggs from all five hens. :)

I have a small coop I built myself. Last winter was HORRID, but none if my girls were frostbitten even though I didn't provide any heat. Two things helped with that: a sheltered location, and good air circulation. You don't want an airtight coop, since chickens produce a lot of condensation...

Vjunebug, I just put water out in the morning and again when I got home from work, bringing it indoors overnight (since they don't eat or drink at that time anyway) to let it thaw. I also feed fermented feed, which is pretty wet so they get more moisture that way as well. If I already had an...

I have a Buff Orphington (amongst other breeds) and even with this horrible winter all of mine were fine without any supplemental heat or light. Be very careful of adding electricity to your coop, I know of at least one person in Iowa who burnt all their chickens alive this winter. :(

Just wanted to share that I now have 5 out of 6 birds laying! Just today I got my fourth brown egg from the Cuckoo Marans I bought from Ottbjumper, her very first egg wound up being 60 grams! While it's not super dark, it's still the darkest egg from any of my layers and has darker speckles on...

I have a mixed flock of large fiwl which is a lot of fun (I love having a bunch of different colors and shapes) but I really lucked out with their personalities meshing so well. I've heard that some breeds are a bad combination (depending on specific birds, of course) like Salmon Favrelles...
