Laurie - I was wondering about admission when we were there yesterday. I wasn't sure if there was any and checked out the website this morning. We came about 9am, so not sure if admission was still being collected. However, we didn't get asked to pay anything. When we left we realized we...

Hi all! Haven't been on in awhile. Got an auto waterer worked up today. Went from the usual plastic waterer from the feed store to a nipple system. Hoping everyone learns to use it! Is just a bucket w/nipples on the bottom with the toilet refiller thingy hooked up via hose to the faucet to keep...

Have a question for everyone. Where do you get your pine shavings? Looking for ideas other than buying individual bags. Both Theisen's and F&F sell by the pallet-load (bags on a pallet) but it's not hardly a savings - was only 10 cents/bag at F&F. I need to do a coop clean-out in a major way and...

Good luck and warm wishes to those of you in ice-land! I was shocked we didn't lose power in the Quad Cities area. We lost it for 8 hrs at our house in the last big snow storm. 2-3 days - YUCK! Stay warm out there!!

ChickBond - Can't meet you guys this weekend, although would be fun to do for sure! If you find a home or freezer for your roo, go ahead, but I am interested - I just have to figure out when to get over that way. I might try to make it worth my while and find some BLRW pullets/chicks/eggs out...

I can't take credit - I've been out of town for work and my husband has had chicken chores so he collected them all! He said he got them all on Monday and was shocked at the 20 eggs!

thanks for the offer, but i have all standards adn will likely stay that way due to egg sales. I was thinking about looking into ordering a rarer breed, maybe buckeyes or something, but again, can't decide. my flock is totally mixed right now with a lot of mutts, and i'm not sure i'd actually...

Sad day today...apparently the dogs have been bored with all the cold and snow and hunted down one of my hens yesterday. Discovered her today. They're free-range and I've only had 3 predator losses in a year which is great, but still sad. On another note, I have a broody hen. We've been...

I added a light on a timer to my coop a few weeks ago and went from 2-4/day to 12-16 - one day even got 18! Sold 15 dozen to a regular customer on Sunday - score! Course my egg fridge is in our garage and it got too cold out there and I eventually lost about a dozen b/c they froze in the fridge...

They definately do fluff when cold, but while the others were walking around and talking, she was fluffed with wings down by herself - that's what made me think something was wrong. And then when I looked at her cloaca and saw a *huge* pack of poo (and the smell - wow!), I knew something was up...

Hopefully I got to a hen in time this week. Noticed her acting a little punky for couple days, then she was standing off by herself fluffed with wings down. Uh oh, sign of a sick chicken. Picked her up, noticed an accumulation of feces around her butt, thought she might be poop-blocked or...

My coop is part of a loafing shed/barn and my chickens have access to the inside of the barn besides free ranging outside. I didn't even bother with the pop door today or yesterday - they can go outside through the barn if they want, but shocking, they didn't! When does everyone add heat lamps...

When I went out yesterday to let my chickens out for the day, had several great giggles as I watched those who had never encountered snow take their first few tentative steps through the powder left overnight. What fun!

Wow... Mr. Ugly sure is..... interesting!! Wish I could help, but I have 2 too many roos as it is. Unfortunatley they're all pretty and I like them! Fortunately, so far, they don't gang up on my girls too much - helps that everyone is free range.
