We got about 8 inches of snow last week and were without power for 5 days. Snow was gone before the power came back on, lol. I had permission to work from home, but with no power I had to go to the office to work. NOt many people showed up in the office.

The roo in my laying flock has to go too. He likes to attack me - I am not letting the flock out to forage becasue I don't like to have to be on guard all the time with him out an about. He is also picking on the lower rank hens if they get too close to his food. Hopefully tomorrow is the...

Have you ever got in touch with neighbor and asked him to bone yard somewhere else on his property. Let him know you have chickens and he is causing a problem. He may not be aware that it is a problem.

Well, out of the 9 eggs that were in my friend's incubator, 5 hatched. I had one that quit really early, and I tossed it after about 4 days. The first one to pip died in the shell, never enlarged the hole any bigger than the initial pip. The next 4 of them I helped out of their shells. The...

A friend at work had a personal emergency and will be gone for at least 2 weeks. I am now the caretaker for his incubator and 9 eggs, lol. I asked how many days they have been baking and he wasn't sure - maybe 7 or 8 he said. Off to the hatching forum to get advice, I have never incubated eggs...

When I was out in WY, the neighbor told me to spread wood ash to help the snow melt better. It's dark and will absorb the heat from the sun, she says. So I tried it out on a snowbank on the sunny side of the house. Didn't make a dang bit of difference to melting that snowbank, just made dirty...

Congratulations on the new grandbaby and best of luck to Kaleb and his girlfriend for a wonderful life. Sounds like that could be a really stressful, very rewarding job. 7 days on, 7 days off is a good deal - must be long days.

Note> This is a new flock that I got as chicks this summer. Started laying this fall. Feeding layer pellets from Fleet Farm - their cheap one, Sprout. And kitchen scraps - stale bread, carrot peelings, watermelon (a friend had one freeze in his car after he frogot it overnight) and I sprout...

This is the first winter for my chickens and they are laying great. I have them in the barn without any extra lights, but there is a security light on that side of the barn and they get some residual light in their coop. Definitely not enough for me to see and collect eggs by. I have 14 hens...

DH has an "alaskan sawmill" that he uses to cut the boards. it is a frame thingy that holds his chainsaw and makes parallel cuts along the length of the trunk. luckily he has a chainsaw that is big enough. It does an ok job, not for commercial use for sure.

Last saturday the Dh and 2 friends cut down the oak tree between the house and the garage. The tree was way too big for the location and had oak wilt. With the help of the tractor and ropes, it all came down in pieces with no damage to the house, garage, garden shed, new sidewalk we put in, or...

I guess I am telling a little lie then. But, it seems to be necessary lie to get people to understand I don't want the hassle of taking money for eggs. They accept "I don't have a license" without any argument. I am also selfish and enjoy finding out what they "value" and want to swap for my...

I bought 15 "female" chicks this summer from the new Tractor supply in Oconto. 9 buff orpingtons and 6 silver laced Wyandots (not sure on the spellings, lol). One of the Orpingtons turned out to be a "he", but so far he has been a really calm rooster. As long as he behaves, he gets to stay...

I had my double wall fount waterer freeze up last week. Have it on the heater now. I need to reorganize the coop - the waterer is now so high they have a hard time drinking out of it. Getting 5 to 6 eggs a day now. Still small size eggs, but glad to get them. Nice calm flock - they get...

We got an inch or 2 of snow yesterday and a light dusting today. Hello Winter! It is going to take a little while to get used to this cold. Sounds like it may warm up to around normal for Thanksgiving, which will be nice.
