My Wyandottes and Barred Rocks have always layed really well. My neighbors had Buff Orpingtons, and I swear they laid better than anything I had. ZigZag-- you mentioned you haven't heard anyone mention a breed that doesn't lay well. I call tell you quite honestly that Silkies are horrible...

We are speaking the same language here. ;) I have thought about light therapy! As Sharol suggested, I have read it really works. And I have a friend who is doing it right now as she is fighting the winter depression too. I didn't actually think about a tanning booth... but why not? That's...

Great pictures, that was helpful! Danz, I really like that idea-- and that is sort of what I was thinking too! If I could divide it up between two pens, that would work great! A two-for-one. Did you put the flower pot base inside or under the tin? And I sure hope you are right about the...

Will it allow the heater to tip so the bird is dumped off? That would be good if so. I'm living in Edmond, in the OKC area now. We are typically about 8 to 10 degrees warmer than Wichita. But it's been so cold, it doesn't matter. But we are liking it down here a lot. It is an adjustment...

And the whole reason I want to be cheap is because I'm going to need a LOT of them. Sigh. I would like to start with the pens that have chicks in them right now.

Great input, Sharol, maybe I should reconsider the option of hanging them vs mounting them to the wall. I just don't want it becoming a roost. I don't have any roosts in any of my Silkie pens, and they don't roost anyway. They all do the standard "silkie pile" at night where they actually dig...

Whatever I get, I want to mount it on the wall. So, I'll probably be buying brackets either way. But if you think the Sweeter Heater puts out quite a bit of heat, then maybe that is the best route. I really need HEAT. Just something they can all get up against along the wall, or bring up a...

Good evening my fellow peeps! I know, I know... it's been FOREVER since I stopped in!! Question for you-- now that I'm moved down here in the Deep South (har, har) I had quite the surprise when my waters all froze up last week!! All of my pens are enclosed in the barn, and every one of...

Awww, sorry about the sour crop! Mine had the squishy crop and undigested food. But mine had been sick for too long and were too far gone. :( There are covered "sheds" off each side of the horse barn-- one side is for the horses and the other is for the chickens. So the pens will be inside...

Okay-- finally uploaded my barn pictures! The horse stalls are done, and the barns are mostly done. The door company is coming out on Monday to install all the doors. We have yet to trench the electric. We'll wait until Spring to trench the water lines.. I think we have our hands full for...

Trish, just let me know you're coming down and you're welcome anytime! :) But you know that! Congratulations on your new soon to be grandson! Sounds like you are getting a good hatch out of your shipped eggs! I got in 10 eggs about a week and half ago from a breeder in california and I...

HEChicken-- okay, I"m trying to think if it was the ABA or the APA-- but they do bands by color so you know what year your birds were hatched in. I was going to buy them, but I had already bought some bands online and ended up not needing anymore by the time I figured out I should have bought...

OKay, I had to think about what my user name was on here! LOL Good thing I remembered my password! Whew! So we're mostly settled in down here in OK. So far, we're liking it. For those that don't know, we've been building a couple of barns to get set back up with the horses and chickens...

Okay, I'm BACK!! Well, not really back, but I'm HERE!! That was an insanely long hiatus from BYC if you ask me. I'm so sorry, I did not read back or catch up on what's been going on. I will just jump in here and try to keep up now. I tried a few things for internet down here. If you all...

Yep, all is well with us and I was not down there. Hopefully I can get into my condo asap when the owner is ready. I'm less thrilled about this move now. I have no clue if this community has shelters or not. I'll be asking about that! It does have a little fenced in yard and I'm going to...

Josie, sorry to hear you've been sick! Sounds like your stealthy cochins have been at it again! My silkies are STILL not laying. In their defense right now, they are all growing in new feathers where they had been attacked from the raccoon. So I imagine it is taking all of their energy to...

one more thing-- if they are not fertile and will not be hatching... handle them with CARE! If they are rotten or close to exploding, etc. you don't want that mess on you. I'd try to take a sniff of them before you go gathering them up.

I wouldn't toss them until you candle them. They could be delayed in hatch and it would really be terrible if you threw away eggs that were only hours away from hatching. Grab and egg, go to a dark room and hold a STRONG flash light under it. I use a small flash light and cup my hand around...

I can't make any of the swaps-- but it sounds like a lot of people will be on the look out for these birds. I hope the thief chokes on his decision to steal them and they become a HUGE problem for him. Still hoping someone knows this guy/gal and will turn them in. We already have our a/c on...

Don't know anything really about ducks.. but aren't they pretty social? Did you only have just the one hatch? Would it be happy with the turkeys? Very cute the turkeys are already roosting! Wow! Totally agree, Danz! I think this is someone she knew, or someone she dealt with, or someone...
