Hey all! Haven't been on in forever but wanted to say "Hi"! There's no way I'm catching up on the thread but I hope all is well. I'm down to 1 small mixed flock (for various reasons), plus my daughter's backyard silkies, but still loving my birds. For Mothers Day I bought myself 16 Welsh...

I have 3 in my layer coop: Blue (LF Cochin) and her daughter (hatched by Blue on 12/1/14) are raising 3 from Vicki's eggs and Cyndi (cream legbar) has 2 feed store EE. In my Bantam aka Broody coop: Elsa (silkie cochin) has 7 - 4 Orps from Jeff, 2 bantams and the mauve orp from Vicki and the...

I've only done it once. But I waited until nighttime when she was asleep on the nest and the babies had fallen asleep under the brooder plate. I cupped the chicks in my hand in case she freaked out and pecked and slipped them under her from behind and then pulled out her dummy eggs. I did this...

If you don't want more chickens then either break her or you could let her sit on fake eggs for a few weeks and then give her some feed store pullets. That way you're not stuck with roos to get rid of - pullets are easy to find homes for. Some hens will never go broody again; or will only brood...

I'm really sorry to hear about both of these - hopefully it's not a genetic thing - Please share the necropsy results when they come in.

Those boys were actually from Papa Brooders eggs. The only thing I've gotten from Pine Creek are some bantam cochin eggs. I'm glad that went easily!

X2! ;) I've had 3 in my layer flock go broody - a LF Cochin, her daughter (1/2 bantam) and a Crested Cream Legbar, all from breeders. If you really want a broody find a bantam Cochins or Silkie from a breeder. I swear mine would try and hatch rocks if there was nothing else

I'm soo sorry to hear this! I have not had to deal with MG and have not done much research in the area but here is a link from a local chicken breeder who I trust on how to treat hatching eggs from a MG positive flock. http://www.norcalchickens.com/egg-dipping.html I haven't verified this...

Yep, that's the one. The extra vitamins did the trick and it was running around, cheeping and looking for company when I got home from work. Last night I put it with one of my bantam mamas who has week old Orps and it was doing quite well this morning. Do you know if her Orps are bantam or on...

Morning everyone! Hoping for a few pointers or things to watch for: My broodies hatched some chicks for a local lady - she left me a few chicks for the broodies to raise and also brought me 1 additional chick yesterday that is close to the same age (probably about a week old; just getting...

I think I officially have a broody pandemic. Elsa (cochin/silkie) is currently hatching mottled Orp eggs. Blue (LF cochin) and her daughter (LF/Bantam cochin) are on Orp eggs (for someone else) due to hatch on Saturday. Storm & Sky (cochin/silkies) decided to join the fun, again. This will be...

I've played with it a bit, still trying to figure out a lot but it's fun. HighStreetCoop has the correct answer about the splits - Please keep us posted as they grow out; I'm very curious. Woot! Hope the little one makes it. Congrats! We, of course, need pictures.

Thank you! I had read about the dowels breaking but didn't make the connection with the sound I was hearing. Mine is still turning for the moment - something else to check though. Thank you! I've been thinking about getting a 1588 for incubating and using the Brinsea as a hatcher. How do you...
