Chickens can be SUPER tame!
Here are some examples of our past chickens that have been really friendly/tame, without being forced into it.
Okay, well this may have been a little forced haha
Ending with a Bantam Splash Ameraucana named Dovely
My boys follow my ladies also, but it's the girls that wander and the boys are the innocent ones ;) lol
Mine don't go far. They did go in my neighbour's yard to eat their spilled bird feed, so we fenced all down that side of the yard. They would have to travel an acre along the fence to get...
You can tell way sooner then 1 year old. Probably get a good idea by the time they are 4 months old or so. If you can tell if a silkie is SQ by 6 months, you should be able to tell earlier with Ameraucanas!
You can not determine if it is show quality until the chick is fully feathered out. You can pick out flaws, but you can not say: "This chick is SQ." It's just how it is. Goes that way with every breed.
Bringing myself back in to contribute to this topic. GOD YES. My bantam BBS boys are SOOO obnoxious :rant
Especially the ones that I am not using for breeding. I am using only my best male and have to extras that have no girls. They are not happy about that, and crow CONSTANTLY. The crowing is...
I have never seen this or even heard of it. I have a layer with wry tail and she gets along just fine. Definitely not a breeder bird. She is just a production type barred rock anyway.
I have only ever experienced leg problems in my waterfowl. Never my chickens. Hmm. I learned something new today :)
Huh. Single combs and yellow legs? I thought pea-combs were dominant? Didn't they come from blue eggs? They don't even sound like EEs..
Sorry that you lost one :(
The only splash I have in bantam is the least up to type unfortunately. I have agreed to show every bantam Ameraucana I have, as that was one of the stipulations when I got them. That and breeding them. He wants me to help promote the breed in my area.
I wonder how long it will take to get those two colours recognized (Lavender and Splash). Splash especially should be recognized. It's definitely a colour and is a result of blue x blue matings. They breed true 100% of the time when bred back to splash. :/
I just find it surprising because I am more intrigued by patterns :) That's all. I understand it, I just don't relate ;)
Yes the white Wyandottes do really well in the shows here. We often have entire shows dedicated to them.
