I was told that gold based black birds have a beetle green sheen while silver based black birds have a purple sheen. Males, however can be golden (carry 1 gold and 1 silver) - no idea how to tell them.
JediJinx - they are beautiful birds and quite popular but no they are not ameraucanas and they won't lay blue eggs. They often lay greenish eggs but can lay any color since they are mixes.
Annababy if you like the EEs, you will love the ams...my favorite breed - sweet, docile characters. Watch your EE roo around the kids as they can become fiesty depending on what breed is mixed in to make them. Good luck!
A friend just bought "blue wheaten splash ameraucana hatching eggs" - when she showed me photos of the parents I had to tell her they are EEs. Many people are completely ignorant of what they are supposed to look like and sell mixes that were sold to them as purebreds while others simply...
Silver is dominant to gold. It is also a sex linked gene meaning hens have one copy while roosters have two copies. Hens are either Silver or gold. Roosters can be Silver, golden (Ss) or gold. Leakage is a DQ for most solid colored birds so I'd buy from breeders who show. The best blacks...
I believe red on the wings is only seen on roosters and comes from autosomal red. Looks like gold leakage on the neck, too, which would mean he is also carrying at least one copy of gold - you want silver gene(s).
I have ams from 4 different breeders. Most arrived day of hatch but the blacks were 3 weeks old when I bought them and the lavs were 12 weeks old. None are laying yet. Both sexes were quite friendly but my pullets even more so than my cockerals as they've aged - they are now all about 5 months.
One of my most rewarding sales came from Craigslist. A grandfather was getting a first flock together for his adorable grandson and wanted a rooster with blue egg genes for him. The boy smiled from ear to ear when he picked his little black ameraucana cockeral. I've found the quickest way to...
I'm in the same boat - 4 out of five of my blue Smith chicks were cockerals...lost one but still have 3 lovely boys and not enough hens for all of them. I'm in south central Pa in case any fanciers are interested. Wonderfully sweet birds - come to me looking for food, let me pick them up...
Lily I agree with bachbach - blues can really range in color...some of my darkest look like blacks from a distance. Blues will have a lighter undercoat that blacks lack. I wonder, however, if the one you call a light blue might be lavender? Blues usually have a darker head/neck while lavs are...
Deputy I have been fortunate to not have had a cross beak am but a friend who did said she kept her chick as long as possible but it was a loosing battle. They are such sweet birds - I just adore mine and know how sad this must be for you. Sending you zen and cyber hugs!
