I'll have eleven Buckeye cockerels and a couple of pullets that I'd like to sell at about 20 - 24 weeks old, they were raised from day-old chicks from Buckeye Dave. I have no idea what a fair price would be to ask for them. They were raised on turkey and game bird starter so seem to be good...

Above all, choose for shape-- in choosing, select shorter, wider back with best heart girth width. This will not necessarily be your heaviest bird but it is good if the cockerel weighs about 5 lbs at 16 weeks old. Look for a thick skull (the thickest skull bird will usually be the one...

I think your advice is good, and that's what we're doing - culling any with defects, and the small ones. We'll let the bigger ones get a bit older and gradually decide. It seems to me that the five with pics here will always be bigger than the rest, but we'll see. Thanks for the...

We liked the looks of 41 a lot too, but have decided to keep the biggest five awhile longer and wait to do the final choosing. We really appreciate the input on which look better even though they're a little young.

Hes too young to tell hes still scraggly and still needs to fill in IMO.
So how old should they be to make selections? There was a paper on selecting birds by Jeanette Beranger and Don Shrider on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy site that used 8 weeks and 16 weeks for the...
Ok, this is the final one above 6 lbs. he weighs 6.1 lbs. He was also the cockerel that was feather picked (see bare spot on back) when we switched to the organic feed (but quickly switched back). I'm not sure what that says about his disposition.
Ok, please help us decide which Buckeye cockerels to keep. This is number 38 weighing in at 6.1 lbs. We can try for better pictures if we need to too. For starts I'm just going to post those that weighed above 6 lbs. They turned 18 weeks old yesterday.

Depends. What is their age? Depending on age, the heaviest bird now will not necessarily be the heaviest bird at one year old (the benchmark). It all has to do with rate of growth.
Yesterday they were 18 weeks old - we don't really want to keep them all until they're a year old? They...
Nice looking birds there PR
As I'm trying to narrow down which of the 13 (was 14 but hawk got one) Buckeye roosters we'll keep, I weighed them today, and 5 of them are 6 lbs or above while the rest are from 4.2 lbs on up. Should I just evaluate the five that are 6 lbs or above (considering...

Use the "search" button at the top left of the page IN the blue bar, (under the BYC title) NOT the button to the right. That gives you much more refine-able search options.
Thank you for pointing to the better Search tool, it looks like it will be MUCH less frustrating! Like your...
In raising our first group of Buckeyes, I have some more questions. First of all, when I do a search here, it seems to search the entire BYC forum - is there a way to search just this thread? I'm sure the questions I'm coming up with have been asked before.
Now the questions - how soon can I...

Thanks for the info on the Purina Game Bird Chow, we switched to the Game Bird Chow Conditioner (birds are now going on 14 weeks) and the feather picking has stopped. Although lower in protein than what I had been giving them, the fact that there is some animal protein seems to have...
Pathfinders, Echoinghills, and Muddstopper - thank you for the replies on the feather picking. I'm thinking that we had some concurrent issues that led to the feather picking; the birds are getting bigger and more crowded, they are getting bored, and we changed feeds to both lower and...
Our buckeyes are 13 weeks old today, and they have developed a bad habit of picking the feathers off each others backs and eating them. I'm wondering if they started this because we were feeding them 29% protein turkey starter, but when we went to the feed supply last week they no longer had...
I just posted some pictures of our 3 week old buckeyes, and was wondering at what age you can begin to tell the difference between the girls and boys? The pics are here: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2010/09/05/baby-buckeyes-3-week-update/ Some of them already have full dark feather...
There are more pictures of the baby buckeyes posted on our website now (I'm better at posting there than here so far). The link is: http://www.betterhensandgardens.com/2010/08/22/baby-buckeyes-are-here/
Of the 30 we received (we ordered 25), 29 are still with us and we've only lost one so far...
