Good Morning, Laura I use the cat food for the chickens also. I read it somewhere on here last year and quite a few people use this practice along with you, so those who flame.... need to give a much better reason against it or stop flaming. I have to feed the cats on the sly or change up...

Quote: my BA hen did The same thing before she died. Really? Do you know what caused it? I am thinking a heart issue if their combs turned purple, but why would there be heart issues in healthy young birds? Heat? Stress? There are so many possibilities...

I never thought to have a necropsy done on the chicks. I have some that will hatch over the next 3 weeks. If they do die, then I will have it done (but where do I go?) I would really like to know what the problem is. I will also check into they symptoms of Mycoplasma gallisepticum. Problem is...

Hi Laura, Wow, I didn't get to read it all yet, but would love some help figuring this out. I will be gone for the early morning but will get back with you when I get home. Thank you! And yes, I know that they are a hardy breed. That is why I am puzzled!

Kathy, thank you! I have just been boggled by what is going on with them. They are a fun breed and I am enjoying them but I was starting to wonder just what the heck we Idahoans were doing wrong!

Thank you! I guess mine are small then. And that is ok. I know this will sound off the wall but for some reason and I don't know why--Buckeyes don't seem to do well here in Idaho. A friend of mine had terrible luck with hers, but hers were also huge. I am wondering if (now don't laugh) if we...

Quote: It really depends what you feed them. I feed mine a custom 23% protein feed mixed by the feed mill, basic grower rations with 1% fish meal, 2% de, and I also give them free choice of oyster shell and a couple of days a week dog/cat food. Along with that plenty of pasture for them to eat...

Hi, I am popping in with a quick question. How much does the average Buckeye roo and hen weigh at around 8-9 months? I am not talking the APA/SOP but everybodys average weight of theirs. The reason I ask is that the ones I have--a friend commented on how small they are. She said hers...

Yeah me too because you wrapped those eggies so great that if they don't it is the PO's fault. You really did a great job James!

Hi James! Hey, I candled the eggs this morning and have at least six developing. It is still early but it is wonderful to know I am going to have more of your Buckeyes! Buckeyes are a sweet breed, at least from what I have seen so far. A great addition to anyones flock.

A little off the subject, but what does everyone do when they are having predator issues? My little Buckeyes want and need to free range but the hawks are so bad right now I won't trust anyone out. The Buckeyes are one of the first to beg to go out to play everyday and I feel terrible. They...

I did that too, slipped some chicks under a broody. But... how soon is too soon to do that? Do they need to have sat for awhile or will a week of broody work?
