Like I said, to each their own. I raise my own animals to get away from processed meats and additives and chemicals. It kind of defeats the purpose to feed them junk and the stuff I'm wanting to avoid.
Its not what's on the list exactly but what additives are used. Dog and cat food has different regulations not related to human consumption. Like Anticaking agents
Antigelling agents
Antimicrobial agents
Antioxidants
Color additives
Condiments
Curing agents
Drying agents
Emulsifiers
Essential...
You all can put whatever you want in your chickens. I have been to a dog food factory and don't want any of the chemical or sodium in my food. Interesting how some Ppl will rant about no GMO or chemicals or hormones in their food but will promote adding dog and cat food in their diet. Its your...
I would never feed chickens cat or dog food. Way to much sodium and too much junk in there. It says not for human consumption right on the bag. And I eat my eggs and meat.
Hi. Welcome to the world of poultry. The short answer to your question is there is a high probability that your chicks are related. You are planning on raising three sets of breeds at a time at the same time as you are just starting this venture. I would suggest you just raise what you have...

The biggest piece of advice Nettie Metcalf gave to breeders of her day was to cull any buckeye that had pure white feathers. There is a difference between a white bar and an all white feather. She made a point that an all white feathered buckeye should NEVER be bred. Period. Everyone knows my...
congratulations Joe. That's the first I've ever heard of a buckeye winning grand champion of an APA show. that's quite an accomplishment to say the least.
Great detective work. Anne Marie has been in our facebook group for a few weeks. She is a very nice woman. And Shumaker Farm has already offered her some great stock. Maybe the diversity between the two groups stock will be great for her first buckeyes.
I have closely scrutenized the growth and production between mine and others who raised lay chicks. The lays were faster featherers, layers and overall production. Heavier birds wirh better stronger bone structure. If you are gettinf the same size at ten weeks compared to 8 week cornish hens...
I didnt raise any from chicks from Jeff. I have a trio from him. I raised some local chicks for meat. I let mine free range and feed 20% grower. Had great growth. As for eggs from my trio they are large and longer than my productions
I butchered some at 16 weeks from a local breeder and they were about 4.5 pounds. I have 2 different lines so to speak so I can say that growth rate does vary depending on who you got them from. If you wait until 20 to 22 weeks you do get a lot more filled out carcass but may tend to be a...

This Buckeye Breeder Directory doesnt have his number listed but it does have an address. There are also many other breeder contacts here as well.
I know there are buckeye flocks spreading out all over the country. We had heat index of 110 for the better part of 2 weeks in July. My buckeyes were out foraging while my layers were hiding under whatever they could find to hide. And they are designed for the harsh cold ohio winters. All...
Emeril did a video on buckeyes. Check it out. Maybe give you an idea.http://planetgreen.discovery.com/videos/emeril-green-preserved-lemon-bricked-chicken.html
From my research, if you happen to get a hen with a real clean wing and tail, she would make a good breeder with your dark roos. Or if one of the cockerels is not as dark, he would be a good breeder with your dark hens. Otherwise I would look for a lighter clean hen or two for breeding less...
I guess you are an expert too. Glad you are getting your laughs. I am not an expert and I misspoke. Genetics are genetics but there are big differences between chickens and horses. Good luck to you all and your too good attitudes.
I understand selective breeding. I just dont see how that compares to this discussion is all. Any true breeder selects the type that they are going after and culls the others that dont fit that type.
