I have said it before, I'll say it again, the presence or lack thereof of slate bar does not influence fading of the color. Some of my original birds from Urch had very dark color indeed, but the slate bar was nowhere near as strong as some of the lighter Brown birds I had. And just fwiw...

I presume you mean molt, not mount. I don't know about your birds, but mine don't molt in February. And I took the photo with the sun behind me, to show the detail in her feathers. Had I not she certainly would have looked even darker.

Can you post some pictures of this cockbird? Does he free range outside in the sun all day? Walt has said that all birds of all colors fade in the sun, I would love to see some photos of these magical birds that never fade, assuming that is, that they do in fact range outside in the sun all day...

Well, yellow legs/skin is very common in many breeds of poultry, including those which were used to create the Buckeye, and it has had them since it was created. It is specifically mentioned in the Standard for the breed, under "Color - Male and Female" where it dictates: "SHANKS AND TOES...

Sure. The current copy of the Standard for Buckeyes is available online at this link: http://www.americanbuckeyepoultryclub.com/files/2010_Large_Fowl_Standard.pdf It's as "legit" as it can get, since the APA has permitted the ABPC to post it (which I have had confirmed again in the past week...

Most of the judges *I* know all use the SOP to judge with, I don't know a single one who uses the writings of a woman who has been dead for, what, 68 years, to judge poultry with. Of course we all revere Mrs. Metcalf, no question there. But I am pretty sure it's required of judges to use the...

Oh no, I would vastly prefer using the Pantone Color System, (but that's the graphic artist in me saying that.) I say, let's call them Pantone 188, or maybe 1815. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cLWcWuH2l9Q/UF9AgSuajnI/AAAAAAAAHdg/EsTHcDetlds/s1600/Pantone.png

The cockerel saddle feathers are indeed shiny, it's one of the ways to determine which is which, pullet saddle feathers are dull (and round.)

Actually, the eye color is still in "juvenile" phase, as they get older it will change to the correct "Reddish bay" that it should be. Not sure why they do that, but do it they do.

I'd be happy to. I will note that the Standard does not address width specifically, it just says "HEAD: medium in size, carried well-up." http://www.americanbuckeyepoultryclub.com/files/2010_Large_Fowl_Standard.pdf I will note the ALBC has some good photos in the PDF at the link below, and it...

Thanks! My pleasure. And no, I don't have the pics you ask for, but I do have some I put together just now showing gender differences. See below (and please note, these are not my very best birds, I just grabbed two up out of the grow out pens and I am not seeking a critique of the type on these...

Yes Dave. These are hatched from my breeding pens. I would have noted otherwise if they weren't. (And the only pics showing are pullets, just fyi.) Is your bird in that photo one you bred yourself? Or did you buy it from someone? Usually I would never ask such a question of someone posting...

Yes, I will be at the OH National this year. DH has saved enough hotel points for me to be able to attend, thankfully (as I've said before, showing is difficult when you have two kids in college at the same time, as we do.) I look forward to seeing everyone there.

I would have to agree about the wing carriage. I hope it's just this one photo, and that normally the bird holds his wings up more. I would also like to see more yellow in the legs. But he seems like a fine bird otherwise, with good color in body and tail, and a nice small comb (which is so very...

Well, some are, some aren't. Those that add in other breeds can't claim their birds come from Nettie. And goodness, who knows what was added to the breed in the 110+ years since Mrs. Metcalf created them? So sorry we won't be seeing your photos of your unfading birds. I was quite looking...
