From the picture, I don't particularly like NBNC too much. Flat back and low tail, and thinner shanks, similar to a R.I. Red. Does he always present himself like this? The rest look very, very nice. Nice job raising these birds, Janet!
OK. I will look at him again, and compare him to the bird...
Pretty rooster you've got there:). I was wondering about the shanks; his look nice and thick but I don't have enough experience to know what they are supposed to look like. My SOP says stuff like, "not too X" for some of the qualities, which I find maddening. I really need to get to some poultry...
Wow, Janet. I think looking at BBB stats is a good idea. It's enlightening to say the least. Thanks for the information.
To David and any others selling anything, which includes me since my husband runs a bicycle business, please please have a written policy for shipping and refunds. It's not...
6 Days without a post????
Well, I'll have a post when I get a few more birds.....
I am still deciding who's a pullet and who isn't in my batch of 7 nine-week-olds. At this point, my eyes are starting to cross looking for signs of cockerel-ness. I'll just have to wait for eggs.
Do we need to feed them differently than our other chickens? We feed game bird feed that we get from the local co-op as well as any bugs we catch or scraps of veggies etc to everyone right now.
I am new to Buckeyes, as well, but my understanding is that they require more protein than other...
Thank you, Christopher. The little gals seem thriftier to me and more eager to forage. The big girls are waiting at the hopper for me to fill it. I have two Jaerhons (egg layers with nice little personalities, for those not familiar with them), and they are the same way; they seem to prefer to...
Hi everyone. I have a question about culling and rate of growth.
I have 5 Buckeyes right now who are all 7 weeks old tomorrow. Two of them are half the size of the other three, and they are not feathered out all the way. Also, these littlest two are very light- a tan color, really. The big...
Welcome, John:).
My Buckeyes eat a bunch, too. I always keep their feeders full. But I haven't found a feed that's 28% protein. Any leads on that? I feed yogurt sometimes for the probiotics, but that's the only supplement I've offered. Maybe they need a steak;).
Thanks everyone. The smaller birds do look like RIRs. But my neighbor who has RIRs says mine aren't RIRs:lol:
I think the big girls (assuming they are girls) are big for their age, and the smaller gals are small for their age. None of them look 5 weeks old to my understanding (which is limited...
Here are some of my birds at 5 weeks old (they have outings in the tractor every day that the weather cooperates). They don't all look the same. The lighter ones are considerably smaller. What do y'all think?

Fascinating posts! My Buckeyes are 5 weeks. They didn't show much interest in the roost, but the two Norwegian Jaerhons I'm brooding them with took to the roost right away.
I have also found Buckeyes to be voracious eaters and early and vigorous foragers. They're very sweet.
That is the part that I love, their personalities are amazing.
I'm finding this to be delightfully so. My six already show distinct personalities and preferences. I have one who's actually kind of aggressive, but I handle her the most in hopes that I won't have to employ the Mean...
The reason I don't sell the "cull" is that I don't want the birds that don't meet SOP to be known as Buckeyes from Buckeye Dave.
I can understand this. Unless someone is going to eat them or just eat their eggs, I wouldn't want cull birds perpetuated, right?
How about them, indeed.
So my six alleged pullets are 3 weeks old. Four of them are quite a bit larger and more feathered out than the other two. They all seem perky and content. I've been reading "Ongoing Selection of Breeding Stock," and as far as I can tell I should wait until 16 weeks of...
