Thank you - I'll PM you if I have any more questions so as not to further tie up the thread. I can't make myself buy commercial chicken, either. I'm looking forward to grilling those two cockerels I have here, and raising more for next year!

Thanks for the information. I don't plan on processing my pullets, either, I'm just thinking of the future plans for my flock. I know, I know - I shouldn't count my chickens before they hatch... I just got my first Buckeyes this year and have 2 cockerels and 6 hens. The cockerels are going to...

I have a couple of Buckeye cockerels that are due to be butchered soon - they're at about 20 weeks right now - is this pretty typical for size for them? How about pullets?

Hmm, I hadn't thought about him being a GLW. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for your reply. That's what I was thinking, I guess I was just grasping at straws because he's such a pretty bird. I finally found out where my buckeyes spend their days. I don't usually see them when I go down to where the chickens are, but today one came wandering out of the tall grass...

Here is a group of my Buckeyes among the rest of the menagerie. The two closest ones are bigger than the others, with larger and redder combs and wattles, so I'm thinking they are cockerels. I know the photos aren't very good, but like I said before, they were in a hurry to get out of the run...

And since the tail isn't very visible, I can only guess by comb and wattles that the one on the right is a cockerel, and the one on the left is a pullet. A better picture of the tail:

I'm wondering if there is any chance that this could be a Buckeye cockerel, or if it looks more like something may have jumped the fence. I got this guy in a variety pack of chicks from a breeder. There were 10 Buckeyes and 15 of misc. breeds (I only wanted Buckeyes, but she only had 2 hens and...

I'm looking for a Buckeye rooster for my flock near western or west central Minnesota. I got some chicks this spring, but would like a rooster from a different bloodline so I can breed my own. If anyone has one to sell, please PM me. Thanks!

Other than personal preference, is there another reason to feed Buckeyes game feed instead of regular chicken feed?

Quote: The forum administrators have asked us not to discuss specific breeders in this thread, as doing so can lead to contention. You can contact me, or Chris, (or anyone else who volunteers) about their experiences with Dave and other breeders, but for now we have been asked that we not get...

Has anyone dealt with Dave Puthoff from Dayton, OH? I see that he breeds Buckeyes and have been in contact with him, but would like to know what kind of experiences people have had dealing with him. I'm also considering going with someone here in MN. Just trying to make the best choices financially.

Quote: With four breeds and a number of favorite mutts that I won't get rid of, what works for me is to run everything together until I want to hatch eggs. I have two dog kennels, complete with tarp covers, roosts, and large plastic dog houses to serve as a nest box. I pick out my best...

Quote: Looking forward to getting some! But I either need to get rid of the chickens I now have (including my big brahma roo who I like ) or figuring out another coop of some sort. I can't really afford to buy or build a new one, so I have to think this through. I kind of want to keep two...

Quote: Many (if not most) Buckeye breeders strive to ensure their males are gentle. For me, it's an absolute rule. My cock birds are respectful with humans, and gentle to their wives (gang rapers get sent to Freezer Camp on our farm.) I would never keep a male with an aggressive temperament in...

Thank you. I just wanted to be sure. I'll have to check with the breeders in my state (I was going to say "near here", but they're still over 100 miles away) and find out what they have to say about their roosters and their temperament.

Quote: Some Buckeyes are more broody than others. I put mine in-between not as insanely broody as say, a Silkie, and not as non-broody as a White Leghorn. I like a bit of broodiness in my birds, as I feel it goes hand in hand with the whole concept of a heritage bird, they should be able to...

Next question: How are the hens as far as broodiness is concerned? Do they get broody at all, very broody, good broodies, good mamas..... ? (That may count as *questions* rather than *question* )
