My Buckeyes do fine in a pen without free range. As with any large fowl, just make sure you don't overcrowd them.

I'm not sure I would classify myself with the breeders just yet, but I have eaten a few. Knittychickadee has certainly butchered a lot more than I have. I found the meat darker than cornishXrock but not too different than other dual purpose breeds. Certainly not objectionable, and probably...

My Husband has been skinning and dressing game for years, and his family had chickens when he was growing up. He can pluck and gut a bird while I'm still halfway through plucking. Of course, I always tell him it's because I have to finish his sorry plucking job. He can actually do 2 or 3 to...

Agreed, shade and plenty of water. And while plenty of drinking water is important, If you put out a shallow pan of water or a small swimming pool with a few inches of water, they will wade in it to cool off. If they are where you can provide some moving air that will help too.

Well, I'm not sure what that was about. Of course, you can't expect any of the dual purpose birds to compare to cornish rocksin the amount of meat in such a short time, it isn't possible with regular chickens, but you can have a decent amount that tastes absolutely wonderful in 18 - 24 weeks...

Some like the shorter legs, but I have seen some getting too short. I like the long ones, I think they are loser to standard. Also the sickles, medium long should be enough to show up and then some past the basic tail. I like hm.

I have found that even in the brooder, if they can have a little sand, it seems to help with the pasty butt. I'm going to try that quinoa too next time I have a problem. My latest batch are all nice and clean, no problems so far.

I agree with tailfeathers. Chicks are growing so rapidly that a couple of sick days leave them way behind. Buckeyes are usually good size, active and not escessively noisy unless they are cold or hungry. She still needs special attention to get her through this.

Well, I'm not sure what the APPBA is supposed to be, or where the show was, so I can't answer that part of it! :) There is the APA and the ABA. Maybe it was a combined show? APA/ABA? The birds are usually placed in alphabetical order withing their class, Which would be the American Class, so...

Quote: I had a bout a couple of years ago that hit my Japs, and never got on anything else. My guess is that you got them just about killed out but missed a few or some in the coop and it took a while to build back up to bothersome level. Just a few is nearly impossible to find, then it...
