I've got a question for those of you that show your birds at different venues.
The pic below is of a coop card and the judges comments about the bantam Buckeye my son showed over the weekend. Did somebody goof up by not awarding him a ribbon or trophy? I must not be understanding something...

You may wish to post this on the "IA here", thread or I can do it for you. There may be some folks in your own town that would love to have them? In fact I'll throw it out now with the possibility that they may be sold already.
My bantam roo seems to growl and well all of them make a motorboat kinda purring kinda noise when one of the gilrs is having egg:30! It's always a group effort and of course they still yell at me like it's my fault. I would like to hear the roar too.
One of them was parading around a bumble...
Hi Laura;
No, this is my parent stock, their offspring don't seem to have that trait. I'll post a toe pic as soon as I'm able but they don't appear to be crooked toes. They are Urch strain, hatched at Urch/Turnland hatchery.
Dave... that is tragic to read about your hatch. I know the feeling on a much smaller scale but it's still sad to think about all those lives. The only good thing is that you were able to find the weak link.
Now a question about showing Buckeyes:
Laura, or anyone else that shows, is it...

I actually use my LED pocket size flashlight to candle eggs with. Has 9 tiny bulbs in a circle. VERY BRIGHT! On smaller eggs I wrap electrical tape around the flashlight to make the beam smaller. Works great!
Works even on Pharoah quail eggs!
Thats what I use too Jim. They do work...
j.luetkemeyer :
I am currently establishing a few different bloodlines of buckeyes so I can begin breeding them and selling them in my local area. I am curious if anyone has tried to establish fresh bloodlines by crossing the original breeds.
Thats a great question! Chris and Laura would be...
I love the new mugs! Nice and big to wake up with!
My Father used to say, when my Mother was going for coffee somewhere, with friends, that she was at some "hen party"
Well it was true! Look what I caught on hidden camera this AM...
Thanks for posting that link Dave! That is a good idea. It's the Supervisor in me that causes me to say we can all do better, try harder to solve a problem w/o excuses, even the PO.

Thats a great question Har. We have one, that is that age now and I don't know if I should call it, "Buck" or "Buckette"! I know he/she's got a couple of really dark patches or stripes down his back, and it's a friendly little thing too!

That's sad you lost your Buckeyes. They are good foragers and scavengers so it is possible they all got into and ate something they should not have. Thats happened to me.
Last week an order of 30 chicks came in and only 4 were peeping. The Postmistress refused to look in the box...

I set 15 bantam Buckeye eggs just today. Have an additional 5 due to hatch in 3 days.
ETA: BTW Laura, that roo sure has a red streak going up his legs and man is he red about the face too! I'm gonna have to rig up a cold shower for him! :
I've never had a broody not accept a chick when you slip em under at night! It's an old trick. They might wake up but, they won't move at night and by the am it's natural to them. I am sure there could always be that first time, but I'd never be afraid to try it.

Laura; Thanks for the info on the little... studio. I will investigate that in a couple weeks.
Anyone; Speaking of legs, is it normal for an almost reddish line in the leg when they are so very deep yellow? Or is this a trait from some other breed that creeps in once in awhile...

I've noticed it is difficult to get good color pictures in the show halls (i.e. the right color)-- the flash, the lighting, etc. makes it come out weird. The pics I took of my cockerel in Columbus showed those same highlights in the tail that weren't there. Your picture does show the...

Tomorrow is Wednesday. How would that make a Saturday hatch date? If tomorrow is day one, then 21 days from tomorrow would be on a Tuesday.
By tomorrow (today), I meant stop turning.
I set my 5 bantam Buckeye eggs tomorrow for a Saturday hatch due date. They are all doing well so far and I'll be very excited to see the results. Would anyone be interested in seeing chick pics?
Thought I'd ask just to test the waters.....
