I work in Berkeley, and know some people with chickens in Berkeley, but I don't live in Berkeley. The automatic waterer and automatic pop door have made life liveable. Before that, I stressed over being home every night. Now, I have left for as long as 5 days with someone just peeking out to...
Be careful of the hatching bug. That will cause more people to do chicken math than almost anything else. I, myself, thought I had escaped chicken math until I hatched. Then, 4 chickens became 18. Now, I'm down to 8, but it's been very hard.
When I'm up in Santa Rosa, we go to the Saturday Farmer's Market. There is a guy that sells coops there. He might have one big enough for 11 chickens, or maybe he would design and build one. Might be worth a look, since it's tomorrow.
Hi! Welcome to the nut house, er, I mean, .
I don't know anything about a silkie breeder, but I'm sure there's someone around here that will help. I just piped in to keep the crickets from chirping.
I feel for you guys who have had to deal with animal control.
I worry about the noise issue myself. My birds are mostly very quiet. Weirdly, I have a neighbor 3 houses up the street with chickens who always seem to be "celebrating." My neighbors have asked me if my birds are the ones...
She's decided that she'll drink clear, plain water. I'll go with that for now. Maybe she's just gotten dehydrated. She's had to rely on me to provide water instead of having it freely. I'll have to change the way I'm doing things, and see if that makes her hungry again. Tube feeding alone...
So, a little update on Violetta...
She is hanging in there, but won't eat anymore. She doesn't appear to have an infection, but must be feeling so awful that hunger isn't even something she can feel anymore. I guess I'm going to have to tube feed her. If that doesn't work, then it's time to...
On the avocados, many varieties are too tender for our climate. But, there are a few that are hardy down to 20 degrees. DSO has an avocado tree in his yard that doesn't bear fruit, but has survived many, many frosts. (His needs a cross-pollinator.) The nurseryman in Moraga who sold me one of...
Thanks for the recommendation. At this point, I'm confident that we've done everything a vet would do for Violetta. She's resting, and looks very comfortable (for the condition she's in.)
Thanks for the good thoughts. Cheryl knew exactly what to do. I was pretty useless, but at least I know about avocado trees!
It sounds like your rooster had almost the exact same gigantic wound as Violetta. It runs from the front of her wing down her side and all the way past her "knee."...
Cheryl, I can't thank you enough!
I'm leaving Violetta in the cat carrier for now. She is laying down, looking comfortable, and resting for the first time since last night. I'll keep you posted. I have to go buy supplies.
I checked on your avocados. You have both Type A and Type B, so...
Thanks for the responses, everyone. Violetta is alive and walking/clucking this morning, but won't eat or drink. I tried scrambled eggs and blueberries, with a side of oatmeal ( a coop favorite). I put vitamins in the water, but she isn't drinking. She is dripping serosanguinous fluid. She...
Thanks, Jeremy. I'm figuring to try some saline-soaked gauze to keep the area moist, and possible allow the skin to be moved back into place. Then, some sort of gauze wrap to keep the area clean. Then, she'll need some sort of antibiotic. I don't even know if she'll eat or drink. I know some...
