I don't feed organic because when I have tried organic or non-GMO feeds, using the gradual switchover method, I watched my egg production go south. Not good. I feed Purina Layena pellets and use a rodent proof feeder in order to avoid having a rodent or wild bird problem. During the last molt I...

Shipping feed is very expensive, and may cost as much as the feed itself. If you have a car, there are several options. Please call before going to these, because I haven't been to most of them recently. Note that I am *deliberately* omitting any stores located on the other end of a toll...

Just because they're beautiful, it doesn't make them fun to be around. But I do enjoy admiring their beauty and grace. I'm afraid that a coop of Leghorns was too much excitement for me - and that was when I was in high school.

I hope to get the opportunity to meet you. The Egyptian goose at the show was the most beautiful, exotic domestic bird I had ever seen. (I'm just not into peacocks, don't ask me why.) It looked exactly like the old Egyptian paintings.

I think we discussed them briefly on another list because of the person who was letting her kids harass the Egyptian goose at the state fair. That is one beautiful bird. I wish sometime you could give a talk on a weekend or something when my husband and I could actually attend. I've had...

Aren't they an halal shop? Islam requires that animals being killed be treated as kindly and with as much respect as possible. Even the prayer said over the animals is a mark of respect - generally a prayer begins with the Bismillah, a reference to God the most Gracious and most Merciful. Since...

How old is the hen? Is she going into molt? Is she losing weight?

We contacted the Organizer and it is apparently a Peninsula and San Jose tour. We thought we were in Silicon Valley (my husband and I both are engineers by training - I'm software, he is both hardware and software), but apparently the term actually only covers the west side and San Jose. So, I...

I wish I could have been there. He has Egyptian Geese, too, right?

It was a fun tour. We met a Lavendar Orpington and were surrounded by bantam Polish. We saw a coop that is in the progress of being built that was architecturally interesting. We had fun. Anyone else think we need a Back Bay Coop Tour for Fremont, Newark, Hayward, Oaktown, Berkeley, Albany...

Sorry. He is young now, and was thought to be a pullet, right? He will only become larger, with bigger spurs over time. Spurs have to be whirled off every once in a while because they can actually interfere with the rooster's ability to walk. An aggressive rooster will attack with their feet...

Do not keep him. He can inflict serious harm on a small child, such as a neighbor child who wanders into the yard. He is also a bad rooster to his wives, so he is right out because there is a.chance his sons will inherit his temperament. This is not behavior that needs to be propagated.. I'd...

I misread that for a second, as Kwell people...... school must be starting.

Works for me. I immunize and feed medicated feed. After that, they are pretty much on their own, although if I see them losing weight I take a fecal sample in. I no longer treat respiratory issues with anything more complex than a hatchet.

No, it is not unlike HIV-AIDS. There are people who are immune to HIV-AIDS; some of them descend from those residents of a British village that survived the plague. It appears the immunity is both genetic - and extremely rare. There are also people in Africa who appear to be immune. Note that...

Since the chicks come from the same hatchery at both Concord Feed and Mike's, resistance in the chicks in one store and not in the other seems highly unlikely. Yes, the immunization doesn't always prevent the disease; but not all immunizations take effect. In any event, the immunization is...

Or you can go to the Concord Feed branch in Dublin. Chicks are immunized for Marek's disease; I don't think Mike's chicks are immunized.

An Octagon 20 Eco. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, so I am happy to loan it to you. Newark is sort of west of, and surrounded by, Fremont.

I'm in Newark. I have one you could borrow - but you have to promise to disinfect it before you return it. I'm not sure, but you might be the Jeremy in Oakland I originally got it from.

I'm running one three year old Black Star and five Dominques who just went from pullets to hens as they hit one year of age. B^) I am really impressed by the Dominiques as easy keepers - they are constantly busy with big biddy business - foraging, dustbathing, etc. They don't lay as well as...
