Hey Bay Area peeps! One of my bantam Orps has decided to go broody again, does anyone have/will anyone have day to week old chicks available in the near future?
Pollinate Farm & Garden in Oakland does an intro to/beginners chicken keeping class. I'm not sure how often, probably monthly. They're on Facebook, you could probably find out more info about the classes there. The store is in the upper Fruitvale district and the owners, Yolanda & Birgit are...
Thanks @KMilani & @tgooberbutt , but I need itty bitty babies, a week old or younger. I don't think my broody hen would accept chicks that were much older, nor would older chicks probably take that easily to her.
Hey everyone. Happy weekend.
I'm looking for day to possibly week old chicks again. I've got another broody who refuses not to sit, so I give up. She's been trying for a couple weeks now, so I'd rather give her chicks than let her incubate eggs, for her health. Anybody got babies? TIA.
There must be something in the air @Honora , that's make all of our hatch rates less than wonderful.
Luckily we do get that beautiful "second Spring" in the fall to try again, do let me know when you're ready if you'd like some bantam Orps.
Your broody looks happy, congrats on the wee ones...
I'm sorry that you lost one of your girls, that's never easy.
I should have a sizable breeding flock by the fall, I was fortunate enough to have several good bantam Orp hatches that should set me up well for being able to share with others. My flock will be sex-linked, males will be BBS, all...
I will, thank you @Honora !
How are your bantam Orps?
Those crosses sound lovely, but I'm worried that the chicks I have now will be too big by the 6th to share brooder space with day olds. Thank you for your offer!
Hey y'all. I just hatched some Olive Eggers, I'm trying to add some new layers to my flock, but my hatching mojo seems to have run out. From 2 dozen eggs I hatch 3 chicks, 2 were cockerels, 1 a pullet. I set another 18 eggs that hatched this week, but only ended up with 5 more chicks...
So...
Anyone interested in a bantam Chocolate Orp cockerel? He's a sweet boy, and should grow out into a beautiful bird.
Put him over hens any color (other than Chocolate), and he will produce sex-linked offspring.
Choc male X Black female= 50% Black males, split to/recessively carrying Choc and 50%...
Your ideas sound spot on, so you're starting at a good place.
As for "quiet" birds, I've found some breeds to be calmer than others, but the degree of "excitedness" varies from bird to bird. Some of my sweet, gentle bantam hens can get LOUD when they're needing to lay. I would say that overall...
Yeah, I was pretty shocked by the whole situation.
The little "White" chick is about a week or so old, so it's barely begun to feather in. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it.
The Chocolate chick, if a pullet, will be sold. If it's a cockerel, he'll be a contender for next season's flock...
She hatched 5 chicks, squished 3 (including 2 Blues), the remaining 2 are now being brooded with a batch of chicks that were a week older. She wouldn't take to her babies, which is something I've never experience with a broody before, especially one as committed as Thelma was to hatching those...
