ditto -- i've put chicks outdoors in unheated pens as early as 4 weeks old, and they've all done fine, even in quite cold (for the bay area) temps. chickens are tough critters.
my one-year-old birchen marans is going to need to find a new home -- thought i would check in with folks here first, in case of interest? he's very easy-going and sweet, i just have decided to keep my other rooster for breeding...
please PM me if interested!
the chicks look fabulous! and Dawn, the color on those marans eggs is fabulous!
i have an incubator full of eggs that should be hatching monday or tuesday of this week: isbars, silver campines, and birchen marans. can't wait to see the little fuzzies!
i'm up in Sonoma Co., not in the immediate Bay Area -- but i solved this not-always-home-to-let-them-in-and-out problem by designing the henhouse *inside* a predator-proof run, using hardware cloth for the wire. whenever i'm home, i let the flock out to free-range, but if i'm not home, they...

if i'm home, i let them out to free-range, so yes leave it open -- i don't know why i don't just let them out all the time, they seem to look out for themselves fine free-ranging when i'm not here (the few times i haven't been able to round them up or etc), but somehow i just feel better knowing...
this one's in Sonoma County -- no insulation, everyone does just fine.
free-ranging outside
my friend henry built the whole thing as a gift for me (i paid for the materials) -- and we may add another 8' section this summer
inside the henhouse -- there are hinged doors that ordinary...
just chiming in, WFS took my two extra boys last summer -- definitely a good option!
and also wanted to say hello, as i technically live in Penngrove too -- am up here on Sonoma Mtn. *waving to my Sonoma Co. neighbors*!
