I know I haven't been on here awhile but I thought I'd announce my parting from BYC and chickens on my favorite thread. Unfortunately, I've been dealt two very bad cards: toxoplasmosis and mareks. The two diseases infected my flock this summer and after months of researching and trying to...
I don't know if anyone is on Facebook or interested in giveaways but I thought I'd share this with you guys just in case. I'm doing a giveaway to promote my new Facebook page and business, Sunset Lane Eggs. I will be selling show silkies and hatching eggs starting next spring. The giveaway...
It's not the heat. This is an ongoing occurrence, but thank you for the response.
I will definitely try that, thank you.
I'll check her. Hopefully it won't be a long term problem. Thank you and hope your Silkie feels better soon!
I'm concerned with one of my young silkies. She breathes with her mouth open and closes it with each breath. Her mouth is barely you open when she does this. She has no other signs of illness and none of the other chickens she's with have this problem. It's been going on for quite a while...
Hmm...the comb is a bit more prominent here than in the first picture you posted. That's a sign of a rooster. The crest isn't round and poofy either. Hens usually have round crests whereas roosters have "slicked back" crests. Maybe post in a few more weeks. Sorry I couldn't help you. You...
In my opinion, the best way to never end up with mean roosters is to never keep them EVER. There are so many nice roosters you cheat out of a good home by keeping mean ones. I raise lots of chicks each year and half are hens and half are roosters, as expected of course. It takes forever to...
I don't quite understand what you are asking. Are you having trouble filling out forms or cage cards for a show? If so, here's a link to a website that explains all the show abbreviations: http://www.pathfindersfarm.com/Cagecards.html
The site also has other great articles on showing chickens, too.
Thanks for the good information. I was trying to use it as a preventive: Ivermectin to prevent mites and wazine to prevent tapeworms. I was just wondering if I could use them at the same time and/or if either were safe for 1 month old chicks.
Can you use wazine and ivermectin on chickens at the same time? I usually ivermectin my flock every year and this year I decided to deepen them once a year too. It'd be easier to do it all at once. Also, are either the medications safe for 1 month old chicks?
Gotcha! I wasn't sure, I've read that bantams are sometimes 18 days... I ran into trouble with serama eggs (not waiting long enough)
I don't want to screw up again!
Thanks!!
There are some people who claim to have chicks hatch on day 18. I have a experienced a day 19 hatch once and several...
Yes, it's the same time as the incubator. Of course, there always seems to be a couple chicks who hatch a day or two early and a couple chicks that hatch a day late. Overall, the median should always be day 21 if the incubating is done correctly.
With chicks that young, the two main fears are mareks and cocci. To prevent cocci, always start your chicks on medicated feed, keep them cool/well-ventilated, clean your coop often, and keep the waterer clear of any chicken poop. I've never dealt with mareks, so I don't want to give you any...
I thought I'd share some photos. This is Morocco. She's only 6 weeks old but has a huge "puff" (crest) already. I'm so excited to see how she turns out.
I think her siblings are jealous.
The bird in your avatar is gorgeous, beautiful quality. I'm showing at the Ohio National this year, the PA Farm Show, the Uniontown Fall show and possibly a few others. Good luck exhibiting yours!
