I let all my Silkies out everyday, cold days, warm days, wet days, dry days, even wintery days. In my experience they fair just fine. Today was a high of 35 and all of them were out going about their normal daily business.
They don't even seem to mind the rain or snow, but I do have a small...
From what I gather, most Silkies prefer to pile on the floor of the coop together. If very low roosts are provided, or ramps to low roosts are provided, some will choose to roost. I have 6 Silkies and 2 or 3 of them like to roost.
Have you raised Silkies before? If not, you'll LOVE them. I call them my kitten chickens lol. Those Reds that are getting posted are very pretty, my DDs would love some Red colored Silkies. We have a small flock of Splash.
I currently have one hen and one pullet laying just about daily, one hen just finished being broody so she hasn't started back up and other 3 are too young.
Is the run predator safe? Is there a cover to shelter from possible rain? Heat lamps are dangerous, I would avoid the lamp, they don't need it anyhow. 5 days is a long time to not look in on them, do you have someone to pop over and see how they are doing, or to let them out in the AM and locked...
I thought of that too. I made this coop looooong and skinny. It is 8ft long and only 2 feet wide. The nesting box will be on one end on the outside with a lid that lifts up. On one side of the coop I will have a roosting pole very low to the ground and the other end with the nest box just open...
I will.
So far I have the legs, floor and back wall all together. The coop is 17 inches off the gound so they will be able to go under the coop if they want to when weather isn't great. I will add a very wide ramp and I also plan to do a porch/balcony with lattice railings on the front. Sounds...
Today Im going to start building a new Silkie coop for all my girls. They are currently in a small coop that I don't love so I will be building them a new one with nesting boxes and the main thing I want to add is a low roosting pole because a few of them love to roost. Im excited to get started.
Its likely neurological. I have seen this in Silkies when they get a hard swift peck to the head. I have a juvenile that has a pretty bad bobble, on occasion when he takes a drink of water and lifts his head up, his head falls back and lays on his back. He will stay like that for quite a few...
I currently have 6 Silkies. Such cute little things. I have 2 hens, 1 pullet that just started laying and 3 young ones that are looking like 2 pullets and one cockerel. All Splash in color. I hoping to get some hatching eggs from Catdance Silkies as well.
Here they are
