I trimmed about two inches of fluff from around the vents of the girls and also the two roosters. One of the boys is almost four years old and the other one is about 18 months old.
I have this white pullet: She lays eggs that have raspberry tinted spots:
Out of 14 eggs, these six were not fertile and the other eight are developing nicely. Why would there be such a high infertility rate? I've had fertility issues in the past which I suspect were caused by too much...
If he/she is otherwise magnificent, I would use it. You will get a percentage of six toed chicks, but it may be worth it this bird has fantastic type. Since it is a chick you won't know for a while how good it is. If it turns out to have so-so type sell it as a pet.
A few pages back someone was asking about vaulted skulls. It is really obvious when they hatch before they dry and fluff up. Here are two buffs, one with and one without the vault. Yes, I forgot to take them out of the turner!
I took some pics today of some of the adults. It was hard to get some of them not panting.
This one is three years old and I hatched her from one of Bobbi Porto's eggs
The buff is one year old and was hatched from one of Sundown Silkie's eggs.
I had eight babies hatch from my BBS pen. What do you think about these colors?
There are three splash, two blues, one black, a chipmonk and a porcelain/buff. The parents are blue, black and splash, so where did these other colors come from?
Good luck! I don't want to sound too negative but I have never had a detached air cell egg hatch. I didn't turn the turner off though so maybe that's the key. I hope so!
The ones that get large rounded crests are most always girls. Also I can tell by her demeanor. The girls sit around, posing, looking pretty. The boys are more active and alert, craning their necks, looking this way and that.
It is always possible to be fooled by Silkies, but I am 97% sure.
