This looked like a great photo on my phone. Alas, not so much.

A picture of a Dominique cockerel. Hatched April this year as I recall. This is the one with the "gallop", he may have had a sore leg but not really any sign otherwise.

This question may sound strange and I've hesitated to ask it before. My oldest (almost six months old) Dominique cockerel has what seems to me to be a very odd gait. Never seen any kind of chicken run like this. It's hard to describe but the closest I can come is to say it is a two legged...

Quote: Curious as to how your pullets are doing. Mine, from the same breeder, started laying early and I think we have got something like 27 eggs in the past 14 days from the two of them.

Eight week old chicks, eggs from NYREDS. I'm really liking these birds thus far.

Thread drift is just in the nature of interweb bulletin boards, it would be nice if one of the staff would periodically delete the posts irrelevant to the subject (like this one) but I guess they aren't being paid enough, that or they are just a bunch of slackers. Just to stay on topic, here...

My old dad was quite the wit. If anybody ever asked the best way to get kill fire ants, mosquitoes, roaches, etc. etc; "Put em' on an anvil and hit with a five pound hammer" I put DE in the same boat with vinegar; my birds seem to do ok without either one so I'll continue to not give either.

Stevenson, It's like deja vu all over again looking at the video. I suspect I have the same Dominique and Speckled Sussex that you do. I think they are nice birds, don't have the expertise to opine on how they stack up to the SOP.

I like that Dominique game cross. If you breed the 1/2 breed back to a game will the barring be retained?

I got 8 chicks out of 32 eggs from NYREDS. The box had obviously taken a few hard licks from the post office. I wouldn't count them before they hatch. : )

It would appear that my computer is messing up. I can see the photos on my blackberry. That tail is odd, I have one with a crooked tail but his it just seems like the feathers are pointed to the side. Yours looks like the whole body is bent.

Quote: It is a Speckled Sussex cockerel, also twelve weeks old. Will eat him and his brother shortly and cross the three pullets with a game rooster this spring. Got another line of Dominique and plan to breed them pure instead of crossing with game.

I'm curious to know if the Dominique breeders here find sexing chicks by head spot as straight forward as this article purports. http://www.dominiquechicken.com/Sexing_Dominique_chicks.html The first batch, of only four, we hatched seemed to be all cockerels but turned out to be two pullets and...

For those that use the plastic bandettes to identify their birds; is the size # 11 appropriate for Dominique hens and cocks?

Added eight more members to the Dominique flock. Somewhat disapointing hatch, plan to upgrade my incubator before next spring.
