That's what I figured and why I passed. I just really didn't see many Dom traits at all other than they were black and white and laid medium light brown eggs. So I am going to assume that other hatcheries are not sending out single comb doms. I just hate getting smoke blown up my feathers. :-)
So I go look at some dominiques a guy was selling on craigslist last night. $15 apiece for 1 year old laying hens (8). I thought, I'll go look anyway! Well we go out to the pen, and there is not a rose comb among them. I said as much, that they were all single comb. He said, and I quote, "Yeah...
Tom the Dom:-)
I took pictures of jets, ships from helicopters, personnel in drills and emergencies for 5years as well as two different schools of photography while I was in the navy, and I swear, a missile launch is easier to photograph than a chicken!
Mine are about 7 weeks now, and seem to be feathering at different rates also. I have one roo that seems to surpass all the others, with a couple of close seconds. The pullets are all about the same rate. I have two( a roo and a pullet) that are still real skittish but the others will come eat...
That's where I got mine as well... I have also read threads in here where they are the friendliest of all other people's birds, but I haven't found that true of mine.. How are your birds, friendly-wise?
Lol Buffalogal, thank you anyway... I guess I'll work on getting an incubator ready for when I get ready to grow this flock. And ya never know... I may luck out and get some good, type-y birds out of this batch.
I have some doms just to 'have' (McMurray birds)... I would like my kids to get into showing them, though, as well as breeding some. The age of the birds isn't really that important, as I am just getting started anyway and I have a couple of years before my oldest daughter is old enough to show...
lol I agree, but she's not nearly as 'outdoorsy' as I am. However, she did recently buy some shoes that weren't high heels, so maybe after a couple of years, farm life has begun to wear off on her.
Editted to add and get the thread back on track,
Buffalogal,
Do you know of any Dom breeders a...
I should also add that I got 98 percent done with their coop and halfway finished with a dog-proof run when I broke my hand... So I have a little more hardware cloth in the coop to put up to make it snake-proof. I'm gonna try to one-hand it up this weekend.
I read earlier in the thread to "Build...
Good info, Lacy Blues! Thanks!
They got some outside time yesterday afternoon. I haven't had any problems with picking yet, but they get plenty of attention from my three-year-old and me lol. I think she keeps them pretty busy during the day when I am at work. My wife, however, is picking me to...
Picture of fastest-feathered cockeral, in the middle..
Group shot of part of the flock..
That nosey little barred rock checking things out...
The deep litter method worked great for a while keeping the smell down... I didn't have to change the pine shavings for nearly the first two...
I will probably move to wing bands as I get serious about breeding efforts, but for now I am just wanting to mark the two fastest feathering cockerals, in case it gets down to everything else being equal when it comes to cull time.
Ok, I lied.. There is a question or two I have...
I have one of my Dom cockerals that feathered out much faster and carries himself upright, with the tail already high and tho I know it is too early to acurately judge his true form, I would like to mark him so I can tell him apart from some of...
Whew! I made it through all 1730 posts! I just didn't want to re-ask questions that had been asked over and over again. It was actually a great read and now I don't have even have any questions lol.
So an updated version of "my new addiction" (LOL Buffalogal.. you hit that on the head!) is... 4...
WOOHOO!!
16 little black balls of fluff showed up this morning!
This is my first foray into raising chickens. So after months of researching, changing my mind, researching some more, deciding what I wanted out of my flock, flock sustainabilty, broodiness, combination meat and egg production...
