Oh happy day! We finally closed the deal on 5-six month old Doms from a breeder in my state. I was almost at the point of ordering 15 or 25 birds from Cackle Hatchery (and I still might) but I really wanted/ needed the half grown birds for at least one hatch this summer.
I've forgotten who...
Most hatcheries do NOT want to see thier names on FB with problems like this and will have you keep the chicks if they have already been sent and will send 'fresh' ones at the correctly assigned times.
I say this reluctantly but it does sound like one of the first symptoms of Vent Gleet, especially if there is a constant clear weeping and the vent is constantly puckering. I hope I'm wrong but if not, you are upon it early and can take immediate action.
I'd give breeders a pass but the hatcheries often send 'extras' out to folks who have delivery dates set beyond of the NEW delivery time, in order to eliminate problems caused by their mis-calculations.
The chicks might even be a day or two older and that can cause loss, due to the fact that...
There's a product called Kendall Udder Cream, manufactured by (KEN-AG <- very important) That might totally heal that light case and will prevent frostbite in the future. It's an excellent product that we've used in West Virginia for decades and it really works. We use it on ourselves as well...
Thanks. I've used Cackle to order Austra-Whites to use when showing my kids and others how to caponize/poulardize chicks and I was happy with them. They were quite reasonable and uniform, making them the best bird I've found as a teaching tool. Unlike the bottom half of their equation, they...
I'll certainly keep you in the loop. This will be the last of 4 breeds I plan to use in my capon project. My kids are using three of the same breeds but have decided to use Buckeyes where I'm going to use Doms.
EDIT: Gootziecat... If you can wait 'til next fall, I'd be happy to give you a...
Thank you again. We finally made contact and it looks like a deal has been struck. She is even willing to wait for me to get back home from vacation....
There are a lot of good folks in this world but West Virginians are 'SPECIAL'. having nothing to do with short buses.
If all else fails, I may take you up on that...Thanks again.
I have Chantecler and Dark Cornish (LF) and I want to incorporate the Dominiques into a strain of White Chanties/DC/Doms for meat birds...We caponize and poulardize for exquisite flavor and to be able to keep the birds 'on the hoof'...
