My son really wants a turkey for a pet. He helps me so much with our routine chicken chores that I'd really like to fulfill his wish. Could we keep just one turkey (along with all the other poultry here) or would it be better to have at least 2? What kinds of turkeys make the best pets? Tom or...
Awww, I just love goslings at that age, still fluffy & soft, but getting so big & busy! Like great big teddy bears. The down near their tails is the softest. I've been hatching Embdens under my broody chickens here.
Hi Lesley, I'm waving to you from western West Palm Beach! I grew up in Miami Springs, so I know where the Redlands are, it's very nice there. Where do you go for your chicken feed? What else do you keep?
If you lived closer to me in western West Palm Beach I'd teach you how to process him yourself. It's a useful skill to have, and not as bad as you think. There are a few messy bits but for the most part it's like handling the chicken you buy at the store. It's worth it to never have to be...

Keep an eye out for cages & things in which you can keep chickens separate, they'll be useful when you have broody hens as well as when you need to separate chickens for illness or injury. I've kept broody bantam hens well in those rabbit cages that have a plastic pan on the bottom &...

You'll hear a lot of folks say "Oh, I always keep my broodies in the coop with the rest of the flock and they do just fine" but I think that if it's at all possible, it's ideal to separate a broody hen. Either move her to private quarters or devise a way to put a barricade around her...

Use the 5%. I put some in the toe of a knee-high stocking and use it like a powder puff. I hold the bird by the legs and lay them chest-down on a table or on the ground. Then I take the powder-filled stocking & pounce it under the feathers behind the neck, under each wing, and under...
Tonight is the end of Day 28 for my broody bantam Q-Tip who has been setting on 2 goose eggs. Last night I looked through them with a flashlight and saw one that looked solid, the other clear. Tonight I put them up to my ear and heard a scritching sound inside one! I pray that the gosling...

You can put any kind of egg under a broody bantam, as long as they can cover it with their feathers. I once gave a tiny Dutch bantam a goose egg to incubate and she got her gosling to hatch. I've broken broody hens by placing them in a wire-bottomed cage set up on blocks to have air flow up...
The friend from who I got these birds says they're Show Quality Americanas. So I should take some photos of them to post here. I'm in western West Palm Beach, near Lion Country Safari. And don't have any plans to be traveling far from home, you'd have to come here. I *might* be meeting...
Well, I'll have to ask the friend from whom I got these guys. She's been breeding & hatching them and gave me these two when they started making noise at her place. It's funny, they don't crow much here, but when they do it's a low-pitched "hoo-hoo-hoo" that sounds like an owl. And they spend...
I have 2 young Americana roosters here in western West Palm Beach, if you or anyone you know is looking for them. One is glossy iridescent black and the other a bluish-gray. I'll sell them separately or together.
