The NN gene also reduces feather follicles on other parts of the body as well as eliminating the annoying guard hairs that can be difficult to remove when hand plucking. So it can be a popular gene to add to heavier meat type birds. Easier to pluck and a nicer skin for roasting. It's...

To add to what Bluebaby said: there is both an SOP for the "official" Naked Neck breed (specific colors and conformation in order to enter in a poultry show), but the naked neck gene itself can be added to any chicken.

If you're on facebook there's a Cochise County Farm and Garden group and I believe a Cochise County poultry type group you can ask in. I know up here in Safford our Curtis Landscaping store has a some chicks but I think they're about a week old or more already.

My chickens LOVE white styrofoam. They will down that stuff like candy, so I have to keep it out of their reach at all times. It just comes out in their poop, but I'd rather they not fill their crops on something that has no nutritional value. I suspect they think it's some kind of mineral...

Just picked up these two boys today. Backstory: I had sold some hatching eggs from the Bresse line I used to have to this guy down in Willcox back in the spring of 2018, and he's been keeping me updated on his breeding projects ever since then. The white boy with red leakage is a cross of...

Yep, you'll need a separate pen. And hens can hold sperm for anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months, so you'll want to pen off the ones you want to breed at least a month ahead of time before collecting fertile eggs.

Ya know... every day I lean a little more anarchist... And then there's this girl that makes it all better. She literally followed me around over half of our 5 acre property yesterday. Every time I turned around there she was, just looking at me. Haha!

And on the other side of the coin, chickens that are nervous and act it will trigger normally good dogs. So getting both the dogs and chickens comfortable with each other is really helpful. It's the same with dogs and cats. Cats that are confident and will stand up to dogs generally don't get...

Ratsnakes are usually our friends. I wouldn't kill it for one indiscretion. I usually relocate those. But then I've relocated rattlesnakes, too if they aren't being a a$$.

I'm starting to see more feathers, and the girls i have separated in the recovery pen because they got too wore out by the roos are looking like porcupines. The last week i've only gotten about one egg every other day. They did this last year. I had pullets that didn't start laying until...

Welcome! Marcia Lincoln in Tucson has been breeding high quality BCM's (and turkeys) for many years and does very well with them. She is actually liquidating most of her flock so she can travel more and is selling off more breeders (blue and black). She posted about it very recently in a...

What I've been doing is I keep one of those fat 29 oz cans you get refried beans or tomato sauce in by the stove and all the egg shells go in it. After 24 hours and they've dried out completely and crush up very easy. In the winter I rinse them out because with the cooler temps they take...

I let mine out once the chicks are 2-3 days old and just watch the flock for a few minutes. The only problems I've ever had is chicks getting accidentally stepped on (although that's been usually by mom herself) or drowning because I didn't make sure all the waters were safe. I currently have...
