Getting plenty of cicadas. I was curious about nutritional value. I was hoping their shells were rich in calcium, but it's just fiber. Plenty of value in the actual cicada though. From Google: Cicada shells are made of chitin, which is edible and nutritious, but they only contain fiber and...

The chicks are out of the dog crate and in the coop with A'hole and the rooster. So far, so good. They've spent roughly the last two weeks seeing but not touching. Fingers crossed everybody gets along!

I will likely add the hardware cloth eventually. Winter is when the possums are the most aggressive it seems. I assume it's that their food supply is limited. So perhaps I'll try to get hardware cloth up before then. The automatic door helps too though as it closes in the evening just as the...

Cool to see a turtle. DD wanted to find a turtle so bad when she and I hiked through the creek by our campground. We saw plenty of small fish and a large toad, but no turtle.

I didn't order a dog fence yet. I should have, but just didn't. The chicks are in the old dog crate now out in the coop. It will work, it's just bulky and inconvenient. All 8 Easter Eggers being added to a 2 bird flock containing a 1 year old rooster and a 7 year old hen... tomorrow should be an...

I went hunting at Farm and Fleet and Walmart today for a dog play pen actually based on my inspiration from your pic. I couldn't find anything reasonably priced - they wanted $80!!! I'll be ordering online. Thanks for the link.

What is the fencing you have? Looks ideal for introducing our chicks in the coop. There's a space under the poop board that I could section off. I like the idea of something that's removable.

Spent this week in Vegas. 90s and sunny everyday! Headed back home - looking forward to seeing the family but not the weather. Started a new job. That's the reason for being in Vegas. The flew me out here for their sales kickoff, which coincided with my first week of employment. I must say this...

Finished the chicken coop/shed wiring the other day. I had electric out there from the old shed, but didn't get around running wire and fixtures in the new shed until this past week. I installed 4 lights in the ceiling inside the shed (2 on shed side and 2 on coop side), a light above each door...

There's a lot of cheaply made stuff on Temu, so I pay attention when ordering something. They take various payment options - I use my card, but through Google pay. This way is more secured. I think they take PayPal too. I got a few things for camping on there. My cousin loves the site and...

I scored this automatic chicken door on Temu for half price several days ago. I just installed it a bit ago and am very happy with it so far. It's programmable to open and close at specific times or sunrise/set. It's all metal and seems quite secure - certainly better than the many plastic ones...

I definitely need to put a collar on this guy. He is quiet most of the time, but he likes to get on the today and stair or the back window over the fence and then crow at the sight of whatever he sees - probably the neighbor's two dogs.

They call her A'hole, pronounced ay-hole-ay. Lol. B3 recently asked why she's named that. I let him in on the story. My cousin who was present suggested he isn't quite old enough for all that language. As long as he doesn't repeat it we are good in my book. :) This is also the kid who said...

I forgot to share that we got our first egg of the year the other day. It was from our old girl (6 years I think now), A'hole. I didn't get a pic and I had it for breakfast yesterday. She hasn't laid again yet that I know of (haven't checked today). She's a tough old been though and I'm glad...

Progress... the door is up and wrote is attached to two walls. The 3rd wall needs wire just and the construction of the run is done. Edit to add: The run is complete for daytime use - still need to hang wire under the rafters to protect from climbing opposums who tend to come out at night...
