    American serama thread!

I kept her and the chicks in a dog crate in the coop. Gave them a chick waterer and chick starter so momma could teach the chicks how to eat and drink. After 2 days of confinement she had had enough and wanted out. Against my better judgement I let her and the chicks out with the other 4...

If this is her first time going broody she may not commit. The first hen I had that went broody I only gave her 3 eggs. I was warned not to do it because most first timers quit. I figured if she started on the eggs and quit I would just take the eggs and put them in the incubator to finish up. A...

It all depends on the type of incubator you use. I incubate all my eggs at 99.5-100.0 using a Sportsman 1502. My hatchers are cooler bators that I made and I always lower the temp by half a degree when they go in there for the last 3 days. Everyone has different environments so not all of us...

No bread for them. Hard boil some eggs and grind them up. Mix with some yogurt and they will be good until you can get to the feed store.

DO NOT open the incubator when they are in lockdown. Every time you do you are messing with the humidity and could cause the chicks to get shrink wrapped inside the egg and then they will never hatch.

I only paid $25 for the 50 lb. bag at my feed store. It lasts forever too. ETA: I just looked it up and a 20 lb. bag at tractor supply is $13

You are better off buying a 50 pound bag. I use is outside at least once a week around the coops. It does help break down the poop and odor. I actually sprinkle in the shavings in the coop too.

Helps with internal parasites. I add 1 TBSP of DE to my kefir smoothie every day. You always want to go with Food grade. The stuff for pools is processed a different way and can harm you and your chickens. The bag I am using now I bought at our local feed store. I'm sure Lowe's and Home Depot...

You can put it just about anywhere you want. It is perfectly safe for the chickens. Just make sure to get "Food Grade DE" NOT the stuff for swimming pools.
