DO NOT open the incubator when they are in lockdown. Every time you do you are messing with the humidity and could cause the chicks to get shrink wrapped inside the egg and then they will never hatch.
You are better off buying a 50 pound bag. I use is outside at least once a week around the coops. It does help break down the poop and odor. I actually sprinkle in the shavings in the coop too.

You can put it just about anywhere you want. It is perfectly safe for the chickens. Just make sure to get "Food Grade DE" NOT the stuff for swimming pools.
