BADGERS???!!! I had no idea and had to Google!! ...I just recently found out there were porcupines in the area, too. Badgers have not been documented in Hays County (according to a map I saw). You should call Texas Parks and Wildlife and have them document them. We have Jaguarundi's in...

I've never encountered the eye being poked out like that! :( Scary, I bet. I do have a rooster that is blind in one eye who gets along just fine, if that gives you hope that she'll do alright. Did you Google for treatments? I don't know if using an antibiotic is recommended or not, but...

I'll probably end up keeping him...he is a good little guy, which is why I haven't put him on CL. I would hate to see him caged or left of fend for himself, either way is death. After we finish the roost extension I've asked my husband to add an extension to the fence to give my bachelor boys...

I have a Murray McMurray Silver Spangled Hamburg rooster that I'd like to get rid of. There is a Hamburg thread on this site if you would like to know more about the breed. Zebra is a good roo and was my "surprise" chick in my order last August. He is quite the gentleman with the ladies by...

The BCM eggs that I hatched came from a hen who, right from the beginning, laid very large eggs. The four hens I have are average size, but they came from someone who probably gets their chicks from a hatchery. Others (at another site) have also commented on the huge eggs their pullets lay.

I think Barred Rocks (Plymouth Rocks) could be good for your plans. Old breed of chicken, good layers. I think I posted a vintage photo on that thread several months ago, let's see.....here it is. There are a few ducks in there too, but look at what appears to be a hen to the left of the...

I wish I knew more about genetic traits, but I don't know enough to give you answers based on experience. :( Just before setting these eggs to hatch I read that a study showed that the larger eggs produced larger chicks, so I went with that theory. I have also noticed that my hens lay...

I thought I would share a photo of my three month old BCM crosses. Hen is a Black Copper Marans and father is a EE/Welsummer cross. I chose the largest eggs and the "chicks" are very very large. They are as tall as most of the roosters, but still "skinny kids". For anyone hatching large...

It's just a roost out in the chicken yard. I just have a 2x2 that I slide through the fencing holes in the chicken run (the covered part of the chicken yard). The chickens like to sit on it in the mornings first thing when they come out of the coop. Mine is only about 3 foot off of the...

This happened to my first flock in the late '90s and I learned that it was because of over crowding. I seem to remember someone here telling another member that it was "normal feathering" but it's not, at least not for chickens. Making adjustments in your coop was the right thing to do. If...

Good job! It looks very nice. I truly love the rustic feel of it, too. Are you using a broody or buying the chicks? I have some helpful suggestions, based on my experiences. Put it in shade if you are going to brood in the hotter months. Put it inside your chicken yard or a dog run to...

I used a medium sized dog carrier as a broody nest for my Australorp. If you look on CL or at thrift stores you can usually find them at a discount price. What I did was kept my (already broody) Australorp in the carrier inside the coop and made a nest inside the carrier with wood shavings...

I sell hatching eggs, but since I haven't actually had any of my own hatches lay eggs yet I can't tell you 100% that they will produce Olivers. There will be some that lay brown eggs, too. Do you live near Elgin?? You can PM me for privacy.

I don't know if JG's are good mamas...I've used Australorps with great success but my young Black Copper was terrible. The current EE seems to be good so far. A LOT just depends on the birds personality. How old is the JG? Be VERY weary of letting your hen brood where the other hens have...

While my babies are not as cute as Hung's, this is one of our new Olive Egger hatches from May 1st.
