Good Morning chicken people!
I've got my first real case of ADR. Ain't doin right. One of my girls, a 10 month old barred rock is sitting still puffed up. Not eating and has some foamy discharge from her eye. She let me wipe it away which was uncharacteristic I'll try to get a picture. Of...
I'm pretty surprised were still getting so many eggs. And through a combination of the excitement of new chickens and excited toddlers we watched each girl lay and with 6 different breeds we know whose egg is who's. so I can tell its just the marans and the EE not laying. Is that weird that just...
Hi everybody. And welcome new chicken friends!!
Been busy with holidays birthdays and kiddos. I've been lurking though. And I do have a question...
Only 2 out of my 6 have stopped laying. I see feathers but no homely looking molters. Is that usual? I'm not complaining as I'm still getting 2-4...
Yes this is my first winter too. It gets wet in the part of the yard where we placed the coop. So far I'm thrilled with the sand. It looks drier. Not caked and muddy. The girls feet look way cleaner and drier so far too. I have yet to try and rake it out for cleaning. But I'm hoping that's less...
I went sand! I was cleaning the coop and run last night as we are having a "hen house warming" today. Husbands family is coming over to see his handy work. Good thing it's raining. But I was cleaning yesterday and decided to give sand a try in the run. Any tips or tricks. So far it looks drier...
I was totally expecting a visit. I've heard our animal control officer doesn't know much about chickens so I wasn't expecting much. But I was surprised. I couldn't find a defined rule on the books. I'd only heard I could have 6 and to preferably keep them in the back yard. So I have 6. In a very...
I got my approved permit for keeping my hens. Finally. From the city of Newberg. But no call or inspection. Just the application back stamped approved and a letter saying they could revoke it at anytime. Pretty anticlimactic. But official!! Yeah!!
Wow!! Great suggestions. The ants run around the boards just out of the girls reach. And I don't want to give the ants poison and have the hens get it. I'll give all of these a try. Thanks everyone!!
Hey all! Question for you... Ants! In and around the run. LOTS of them. Our house is 110 years old and we almost always have ants of some type. But I don't know what to use around the run. I just don't want it to get out of hand. And they're just outside of where the girls could get them. Thoughts?
What a beautiful girl that jelly is!! I'm so jealous of your gorgeous girls. Hopefully my next house comes with lots more room for chickens! And for the watering system... Oh my goodness. So much better. Just not having to clean and fill those... Such a huge deal...
Took the bowl away. Filled up the bucket. Closed myself in the run with them....TADA!!! The silly old things figured it out. What a bunch of city chickens. Spoiled by the water bowl.
Thank you guys!!!
hmmm remove the extra. I guess maybe that is it. I have a few bowls in there because I read that in the heat the chickens would want to stand in it to cool down. And without them having interest in the system I keep refilling those bowls. Today is supposed to be 90 here in the portland area. I...
My chickens won't touch the watering system we put in. Any suggestions? I put food on or by them. Nope. I put shinty red material to attract them. Nope. I left one in the open position to show them it was water. Nope. I'm tired of poop covered waters I have to clean every day. I was so excited...
Take the extra melons and freeze them in pieces. I've been freezing our extra or overripe melons so the chickens will have some fruit still once the wether turns. :)
I used to work at Roths back when I was in highschool. Soo a long time ago. But they always had a few people who would come in for their box of " bunny food" etc. they pride themselves on being local. I'd give them a try.
