My 5 girls aren't all that thrill either. Half the run is covered in snow! But at least they have the 2' clearance under the coop where it's dry. And they are having a good 'ol time scratching and digging under there. They still "dogpile" at night so I'm not to worried about them keeping warm. I...

Update: the egg eating has stopped. I'm thinking now that it just happened because the girls were fighting over nesting space, and one got broke so they ate it. (I hope). I tried to alleviate the nesting issue by adding two cardboard boxes that I cut the ends out of, and filled with bedding...

Thanks. We still plan on fixing the nesting issue. But for now, we have managed to avoid any egg loss by going out while it's still dark and gathering the ones from our Red Syar, and BR. They tend to lay about 530am. Our EE's lay between 8 and 10am.

My only evidence of somebody eating her egg is the dime size piece of shell being all that was left. Plus my EE's beards being wet and sticky. We are going to try and figure out a way to add more nesting

(I will be posting this in another forum as well in order to get more answers) HELP!!! I have 5 girls. 3 EE's (6mo), 1 Red Star (8mo), 1 BR (6mo). We hadn't gotten any eggs from our Red Star (our best layer) for a couple days. No big deal. I just figured she was taking a break. Yesterday I was...

We have an egg!! Woohoo!!! It's been nine days since she laid her last one. And other than her vent being red and swollen, she seemed fine. Full of energy as always. But I kept an eye on her anyway. This morning when I opened the pop door to let the girls out, she was right there to greet me as...

I wondered the same thing so I keep checking under the coop and in every corner of the coop...nothin'!

Help... My Red Star Brandi started laying right on cue at 20 wks laid one egg a day everyday for 25 days (including one double yolk) and then just stopped! We are at day 5 with NO egg. She's not molting, seems healthy and happy, no new behaviors... I just don't get it. The coop is lit. ( I...

Oh what beautiful girls! We put pumpkin out for the girls over the weekend. I can see where they've pecked at it a bit. But they don't seem that interested in it. In fact it looks like they tried to bury them lol :idunno

I'm not sure I'll be wrapping my run with plastic. The way we designed out coop/run is the girls have an 8'x8' "open" run (framed out, surrounded by wire, and roofed with corrugated plastic), but there is also 2'hx8'Lx4'w space under the coop. They like going under there to get out of the...

I had the pleasure of eating my first few fresh eggs for breakfast this morning. Omg so good! I was surprised however that the shells were so thick. I thought first timer eggs the shells were usually much thinner. These were almost difficult to crack. Am I doing something wrong? Is she getting...

Well I don't think she's sure what she's doing yet lol Cause while the last two days have been around 2pm, today's was about 10am... just a little less than the typical 24 hours lol

Brandi laid another egg today :) And I am happy to say the the ceramic egg (on the right) worked as far as getting her to use the nesting box! Just curious, is there anything I can do to encourage her to lay earlier in the day? Currently she is laying about 2 in the afternoon.

Well of course I could be wrong. But the lacing is just beautiful. It's the first thing that drew me to her. Here's a better pick out in the sunshine today

Ya I figured that was why she did that. I do the same thing...give her a little scratch and send her on her way lol

Thanks :) I believe mine is a cross between a RIR and a Gold laced wyndotte. I wasn't told this when I bought her. I'm going according to the "lacing" on her back. I'll get a better picture later. It's so funny how she squats down when I touch her back

I have heard the too. That was one of the reason we chose her. My others (3 Easter Eggers, and 1 Barred Rock) should start laying (hopefully) somewhere between thanksgiving and Christmas.

She's a beautiful Red Star. This was taken when she was stil in her quarantine crate. Obviously she's out in the coop/run with the others now. I just couldn't find a pic on my phone of her out there

I'm so excited! One of our girls laid her first egg today! Out was small of course. But shots laying :yesss: I can't wait till the other four are old enough to lay. This one is the one I got at the Fall Poultry Swap. I think she's about 5mo. The other four I raised from chicks and are only...
