I insulate the floor and under the nesting boxes. The rest of the coop is kept tight to avoid drafts but with good ventilation up at the roof to allow the moisture from their breath to escape. So far, four years in, no serious frostbite or problems.

I just got six Speckled Sussex pullets yesterday. It's been a few years now and I have to get used to the peeping again.

My flock has a nice dry coop and large mesh covered run and in one corner of the run is an Igloo dog house that was laying around and I put into the run just for fun. During this snow time they would all leave the coop and nosh down on some food and then spend the rest of the day all huddled...

kbil0461, you do know new chicks need a lot of heat and a draft free environment?

Funny how often the pullets you buy develop long tail feathers and big mouths.

My change for this horrid cold, (-17 two nights ago, -12 last night) is to keep them closed inside the coop until it warms up. Their body heat takes the curse off the cold and lack of drafts keeps them reasonably happy inside, for a while at least. It is still -4 here but as soon as it gets to...

I am in Central Mass and my feathery bunch is going on four so they have been through a few winters now. I just make sure the coop is draft free but at the same time it is vented near the top to allow their breath to leach out. I do give them some scratch toward evening to give them something to...

My bunch has left the coop and grabbed a bite to eat and then fled to the 'Igloo' to hope this stuff disappears. Chipmunk the roo is keeping guard while three other roos and five hens hide inside.

I'm in the hills of Worcester County and my temps are about the same as Orange. My feathery bunch is going on four years old and they don't lay in the winter any longer but should start up again in the Spring, I provide no extra light and let them have a vacation for the winter. They seem to...

The first year I had a base heater for a water fount in the coop and kept that full all the time and added a second metal fount outdoors during the day. That worked okay but last year my coop setup did not let me put the base heater in so I just brought the feathery bunch out water in the...

I am in New Braintree and I can remember putting the kids into their outback digs in mid May or so. I did have the heat lamp out there for about two days mainly because I could guard it well and fasten it in place but they decided it wasn't all that cool after all. This year has been HORRIBLE so...

I heard the six chick minimum was to keep people from buying one chick for an Easter present only to have it quickly die from lack of proper care. I guess they figured if you have a six chick investment you might take better care of them.

Hiya, Dunbar, I do lots of shopping at Hannafords in North Brookfield and most always wear a straw hat with rooster sickle feathers in the band. If you shop there and see me say howdy. George

I am out in farming country and have noticed fewer hawks this year, don't mean there are none but I don't see as many when I am out on a tractor working hay. Vultures all over the place and coyotes are plentiful and I think there is a bobcat or two around. I did have a hen get hit by a hawk last...

Klem's in Spencer on Route 9 gets chicks in after Easter time. They get all kinds and reorder several times during the chick season so you can never tell what they might have in at the time. I got silkies there last year.

Scared Stiff, I'll see what I can do. My friend has a aviary and runs full of exotics, peafowl, pheasants, turkeys and partridge as well as guineas and chickens. I will see what I can pick up over the next few weeks. My own chickens are ready to molt any time and I'll collect some of their's as...
