Very glad you joined the flock! We need more chicken people in MA!!! Great choice of breed, getting the silkies, they are very friendly. I wish you luck and if you have any questions you can go visit the learning center at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/ or ask me!
That is great to hear! I wish you the best of luck with them. I will be getting chicks from my pet chicken on June 8th which I ordered months in advance. I will be getting a buff silkie bantam, salmon faverolle, mille fleur belgian d'uccle bantam, white sultan, silver laced cochin, mottled...
Very happy you joined! I am glad more people are getting chickens in MA. Chickens are great- and the BYC community is just as good. If you have any chicken questions don't hesitate to ask me or anyone else any questions you may have as we are all willing to help
I only know of dodge grain as well. I don't know the "quality" of their pullets, but tbh when I went in they didn't look the best in the small cages and it was very cramped.
Do you have any certain breeds in mind that you want to get at Dodge Grain? If you want to ensure maximum friendliness, make sure to handle them a lot!
!!!!!! You will find chickens are one of the best pets, they give you eggs too! I am fairly new to chickens (about 1.5 years) but feel free to ask me any questions you may have and I'll get back to you within my best ability! What are your primary use for the chickens- eggs or them just being...
Americanas are more rare than you'd think- most hatcheries say that it is an americana (but they are actually easter eggers). Getting a true americana is hard- you can only get them from a breeder. Easter eggers lay colored eggs as well. Marans lay a dark chocolate colored egg. They are not...
You will find the BYC community is the best when it comes to knowledgable people! I would recommend a buff orphington, barred plymouth rock, easter egger, australorp, Rhode Island Reds, Faverolles, sussex. These breeds lay 4-5 eggs per week and are pretty docile, and are decently cold hardy...
Dodge Grain is in NH, they get chicks shipped to them, but it is over an hour drive. You can see what they are getting in here: http://www.dodgegrain.biz/#!poultry/cf0k Good luck on raising chickens! They are great! If you want colored eggs I recommend easter eggers which can lay a variety of...
I just wanted to thank you a ton for letting me know of this show! I wouldn't have known it was going on. I went and it was a blast, we even brought home a new cochin. Thanks a ton! :)
welcome to BYC! Do you have chickens yet or are you planning on getting some? I'm glad to see others interested in chickens in MA, because not many people I know have them, but they are wonderful! :)
It is very hard to find a good breeder in MA with a lot of breed assortments, and finding bantams are even harder. I really wish there were a big chicken breeder in MA so if we wanted to add any additions to the flock we could do it very quickly. There are a couple breeders in MA but they don't...
To be honest I would consider the Cochin if it wasn't straight run, I already got my rooster and would like a Cochin or Cochin bantam pullet, if anyone has this let me know , thanks :)
You could try transferring the eggs to an incubator,
And if you don't have one you can pick one up at your farm store. I recommend the hova bator incubators. Good luck :)
Buffy seems super sweet, is she friendly? Also what breed is she, a golden comet?
super cute chicks! Sorry one of them didn't make it :(, but hopefully you will receive your new ones soon! I just got 8 chicks in the mail about a week ago, all alive (see the last page of this post for a couple...
