I second the vote for Ideal hatchery. It seems affordable to me and I've never lost 1 in shipment or for health reasons. I only buy from Ideal.

We also do non gmo/organic. It is expensive! Thankfully we supplement with lots of greens. (We have a hookup with the local health food stores)

I feel like I always have more broody hens than laying hens.:barnie Muscovies have to take the cake! If anyone wants to hatch eggs with a broody I highly recommend muscovies.

Woo! Found this thread again. I'm just posting to make sure I'm subscribed. :) hope everyone's well. My allergies are out of control this year. All birds are good though. Way too many Broody hens. The muscovies are the absolute worst. I know I should get them eggs or babies but we are at our...

My favorite egg layers that do well here are probably austrolorps. But that's partly because they're very friendly. Almost all my backyard girls are austrolorps.

Bantam Cochins are my favorite roosters! I hope you find homes for them all. We're in town now so no roosters for us :(

Have you exposed your old birds to the new ones? I'm so sorry you bought sick birds. I would be pretty upset. There are very few people I would trust to buy birds from because of reasons like this. I wish you lots of luck in dealing with everything.

I googled this and found something saying possibly e-coli. I know nothing about that and am not saying she has it, but maybe look up the symptoms on BYC. Good luck.

Honestly I wouldn't stress it. I have 5 week olds outside with no mama and they're fine. But I'm not known for pampering chicks. I'd just watch them. Good luck.

Yikes. No idea what it could have been but that's maybe worse than finding a live one! I live in town on a 1/3 acre really close to OU in Norman and I've seen fox poop in the creek (1 house down) plus I know we have nesting owls. Those are the only 2 in town things I can think of that might take...

Wow that's a big possum. We just caught one that made off with a chick the night before. I think our possum was maybe half that size! My kids were really hoping it would play dead. So far, after a year and half back in town the only predators we've dealt with are possums. 2 total...

@limited25 Im no expert but I isually worry more about how the big girls will treat the younger chickens. I've never had a rooster hurt a young chick but I've had hens do serious damage very quickly. If you decide to integrate now I would try to put something in the run only the smaller chicks...

Im so sorry for your loss. That's so very sad. Last Easter we lost 30+ ducks to our dog; it was terrible. I hope you're able to start over. It can be hard loving poultry so much but I still think it's worth it. :hugs

There's also someone in the Noble area that raises all colors of d'uccles. Not sure if that's closer for you (about 30 minutes from central Norman)

Careful! Last time my husband surprised me with the "leftover chicks" he brought home all cockerels. Granted most people can tell what they're getting-he was just too excited to pay much attention.
