I wanted to pass this on to everyone! This will be a great lecture for anyone especially if you're new or looking to get into raising chickens. It's completely free and open to the public- whether you're a client or not. If you'd like more information, please PM me
Love jersey chickens. I get new ones from them every year. Some of my best hens are from them. They are very passionate about their animals and it shows. They hatch their own and always have a nice selection.
So there's actually a bunch of threads on this. Mixed opinions on why they're sold in the first place. One person on a thread put them in the incubator and they began to develope. I didn't see b if they ended up hatching though.
It was definitely an osprey. I scared it away and it just sat on a fence post about 20' away and stared at me. My husband even shot small pebbles at it with a sling shot and it took 3 hits before it flew to a higher branch. I dont know if it would have eaten her but it had no problem killing her.
Welcome and sorry about your leghorn. We lost 4 out of 6 of our chickens about a week or so ago. It stinks. The not knowing is awful. Shadow's right- so much info can be found here. Welcome!:frow
that's awful!!!!! you're absolutely right, you feel vulneable and helpless. we have electric fencing that is supposed to be bear proof. it wasn't on the other night when we had the attack but it was the first attack since we got the fence a few years ago so it does work. i've touched it by...
the guilts the worst but we have to learn from what we did (or didn't do) and do better next time. We odered an automatic door yesterday. We've talked about getting one for awhile and figured nows a good time. I understand things like this can happen but i want to do my best to make sure it...
On the happy side I went back to Jersey chickens today and picked up some more chick's. I got a light brahma (brahmas are by far my fav breed), an australorp, and a salmon faverolle. Never had these two breeds before so I'm excited to get to know them. The 5 toe thing is adorable!
That's awful! I get the being mad at yourself too. I knew my husband took the battery off the electric fence to charge for the night. How could I not have closed the coop door!?!? I just feel so awful and guilty. I take care of animals for a living and I didn't do a very good job of taking care...
So the one hen I found who had been dragged out into the yard isn't doing so well. She was very out of sorts today which I assume is to be expected after being dragged out of the coop. She picked at food but it was more like going through the motions. She drank alot. I just went out to make sure...
I just rummaged through all of the surrounding neighbors yards. Random feathers here and there but no piles of them and no bodies. I'm sure it sounds morbid but I wish I could find their bodies. It's just awful. It's so hard not to put our human emotions into our pets too and not dwell on how...
Just woke up to shreeking. Found one of my hens in the yard still alive but in complete shock and 4 missing including the eggs that one was hatching. Feathers everywhere. First night our electric fencing was off for recharging. Just awful.
8 days ago we put 4 mallard duck eggs under a newly broody hen. after laying the 4th egg the duck never came back which i guess is a good thing because we live about 1/2 a mile from water! i've ALWAYS wanted to hatch egss so we figured why not give them to Beans to hatch them. well we candled...
