Crossbeaks can learn to survive if you give them some help learning to eat. but without eyes to help it .. I don't think it's chances are very good, at least not in a flock.

If you buy a styrofoam incubator think about upgrading the thermostat. About half the people do fine with the factory model but about another half have trouble with it and buy a better thermostat.

If you watch the Tractor Supply stores you can sometime pick them up half priced in late April to May. They start marking them down after they are done with the live baby chicks and if they are still on the shelves by May I have seen them at half price.

I was talking to you the other day. I have one left over. It used to have a lovely blue glass bowl until the cat tried to drink from it and broke it. I think I remember where it is so I am going to give it a try before I spring for a $60 dollar machine.

I am curious to know if anyone here has used a reptile humidifier in an incubator? I am talking about the one that runs about $60 on Ebay and is external and pumps the humid air into the reptile's terrarium (or incubator in my case). I like the fact that when empty you just unscrew the bottle...

I am refitting a homemade incubator with new sealing for the door, new thermostat, a special sponge for the water, and since I can't find my humidity probe I guess I will order a new one of those. I am saving up for a reptile humidifier because the machine is outside and pumps in the humid air...

You can also take vinegar and cotton swabs and make two windows one on the end for the light to shine into and one on the side for viewing. Dip the swab in the vinegar and then rub in a circular motion to remove some of the brown off the egg. Wipe with paper towel. This also helps because the...

I got my first quail egg on Halloween! What a treat! She gave me another today. Of course out of the 6 quail I come up with 2 girls and 4 boys. I will just have to hatch some more eggs!

My little dun colored chick is going to make it. I can't remember if I posted on here too or just on the Mid TN thread. It had a difficult hatch because the incubator ran dry in the end when I was at work. It was so weak at first that the action of breathing made it rock back and forth like a...

Well I am going to tinker with mine. I want to try an idea for a humidifier made from an aquarium aerator stone and a jar of water. Bubble air through the water. I also want to put casters on the bottom (it is a cabinet bator) for easy movement. I am going to replace one of the "drawer" faces...

Yep unplugged mine yesterday. Last hatch netted me 6 quail and one chick. Ran dry while I was at work and it made the last 3 eggs hatch difficult. The chick chick is a bit splayed (I've hobbled it) and weak but is gaining ground. The 6 surviving quail (there were 9 but they had Cerebral Palsy...

Update on the quail baby. He is up and toddling around with the rest. Found my art lamp. They killed the weakest baby during the night so I have them in the aquarium brooder now so that the two new hatchlings don't get killed. Lost one last night who stumbled out and crawled through the vent...

I have 7 QUAIL! They weren't supposed to hatch until Friday. I was moving the 4 chicken chicks (one week old) to the larger brooder and was going to clean the aquarium hatcher/brooder out for the quail hatching on Friday. I heard peeping coming from the incubator and I already had 3 with more...

Well if you are living with them as neighbors then you goat must be nimble! Here is something that a shepherd aquaintence of mine does in that country. She puts out an electric line with aluminum foil folded over the wire. Then she smears the foil with peanut butter. When the coyotes lick the...

There are some gorgeous Breda eggs on Ebay. Free shipping too! Hey about Pygmy goats: Don't let their lack of stature deceive you. They can jump 4 feet! If we get goats again it will be Myatonic Goats (TN Fainting Goats or the Silkies). They can't jump or low crawl very well.

You should check out the Pyncheon bantams. They are on ALBC's endangered list. They are crested and millifleur. Thomas Jefferson raised them.

If it was alive it would attempt to breath for about a minute before dying if it was too early. I did that by accident earlier this year when I thought the eggs were dead. So I put the rest of them in the incubator and got 2 to hatch out. One more tried but was upside down and drowned.

No but that is what they started with. That is the original CornishX. The commercial cross has it's problems. You have to ask yourself if a less high maintenece chicken is worth the 2 or 3 more weeks that it takes to make the weight you want. There is some good research that says that the ones...

I have had the ReptiPro recommended to me by a BYC member who had a 5000 and love it. That one can go higher than just one dozen. The 6000 has been out a year now and had mixed reveiws at first. Mostly problems with the window fogging from a poor seal. The more recent reviews have not been as...
