Ok expert hatchets. Can I start shoving eggs under my broodies? I'm not convinced he's doing his job yet. Old roo has been gone for 3.5 weeks, new guy has been in for 4 days.

Ugh. I am going to get myself into trouble this summer. I just moved 61 chicks (CX) outside because they were stinking up the basement too much, have 6 chicks in the brooder, and 40 developing in the incubator, due to hatch in 9 days. I have NO WHERE TO PUT MORE CHICKS but for some reason...

So, I was planning on setting eggs today. Fired up the genesis on Friday. Put 2 thermometers in there to check the thermostat accuracy (the one ON the unit was right on last year). Now I'm having a problem. The readout on the unit, which I know are notorious for being wrong, says 99.5. One...

you could also toss any with really bad aircells.....like completely detatched. I never had any luck with those, despite reading about the success of others.

That's what I figured, and I already have one, actually, but it gaps a bit on one side just enough that a chick can fit through if it really wants to. Not a big deal when it's wheaten ameraucanas and black copper maran (which is the batch I first used it with since I also had olive eggers I was...

We're back from vacation and I can start INCUBATING!!! So besides a HWcloth divider, does anyone have any good ideas for separating eggs/chicks for hatching in a genesis? Here's my problem: I am collecting eggs from one pen for EEs under a barred roo (so everything should be barred that...

low-tech fix! put a piece of tape over the switch cheaper than messing with wiring, or at least a hold-over until you have TIME to mess with the wiring. I have a brooder question. I'm considering making brooders out of orchard crates (roughly 4ft x 4ft). I hatch mostly LF. How many...

I think my 'refrigerated egg test' may already be a bust. Went out to check for eggs and she had all 6 eggs pushed almost all the way out in a circle around her body. Only 1 was *under* her.

These refrigerated eggs are kind of 'on a wing and a prayer' to hatch. Some of them have been in there for at least 2 weeks. I'm pretty confident they're from my Wyandotte hens though, which is the only reason I'm attempting. My "ornamtental" Polish and Houdan hens are seriously out-laying...

dog attack taking out 25 chickens = me shoving eggs under broodys. it was 2/3 meat birds, but i'm still going to give my grumpy girls eggs. I'd fill up the incubator, but it's too hot to ship, and it's apparently too hot my the girls to actually LAY EGGS! I'm doing a refrigerated egg...

Off to float test this morning. I'm REALLY hoping that my broody managed to hatch another 1 or 2, and that they didn't quit. If her eggs are done, she's getting all of the chicks. I attempted to put chicks under my other broody and she definitely will NOT be getting any. Ugh.

I'm getting impatient. None of the eggs that pipped this morning have done anything else since then. We're going on 8 hours of no visible activity. Gaah!!! I didn't get the nest box closed off in time and my polish hen jumped in there to lay and broke and killed one of my Marans eggs. I'm...

Pips! YAAAAAY!!! Of course, one of the silkie eggs is pipped at the wrong end. Ugh. Must. Keep. Hands. Out. The most exciting part for me? I'm pretty sure one of my marans eggs is pipped. OH HOW I HOPE IT HATCHES AND IS A PULLET! Need to go feed the fat little meaties and peek under...

Well I have a second broody and she's a grumpy one. Dh said something to the effect of not caring if she hatched out 3 or 4 chicks so now I have to decide if I want to quickly buy some eggs or break out the food coloring for the hens whose eggs I'd want to put under her......decisions decisions...

That would be my plan. Last time, my silkie went broody the day before lockdown, so I snuck half of my eggs from the incubator under her. The eggs I have now are on day 10, and sat straight up in the turner for 5 days before I plugged the turner in. I might have to re-evaluate things though...

Well next time I'll just take the whole lid off the incubator to pull eggs out. I was trying to keep the lid on as much as possible, and that just got me a mess to clean up! So, if it were you with 4 very-much-wanted marans eggs, would you put all 4 under your broody? just 2? She hatched 5...

Well I dropped an egg during candling last night. And OF COURSE it was one that was developing. My husband wasn't very happy with me, and *I* wasn't very happy with me. My silkie appears to be broody again. I moved her in to the new silkie/crested coop last night (too much picking going...

I've NEVER had air cells look good after shipping. I'll plug the turner in on my next trip into the basement. :) I'm SUPER excited. I've got lav. orps, silkies, marans, speckled Sussex, and mille fleur leghorns in!

So how many days before I should plug my turner in for shipped eggs? I have 35 in the genesis right now, and today is day 4. They've been settling in there straight up since Saturday after their trip from California to Michigan.
