Thank you Fancy, once a week sounds perfect. Dear god, I couldn't imagine getting vicks in my eyes though, argh.

Fancy, how does the vicks vapor rub differ from vaseline, and how many applications would be needed for scaly leg? Do you need to do it daily or every second/third day, and do u need to slather the legs in it like vaseline? Can you mix the two? I'd say my pekin Esme has a mild to moderate case...

Actually the stuff I use is this, I got it from petbarn, it's like small pebbles and grit in shape, but it's a calcium supplement. http://www.lovitts.com.au/product/poultry-calcium-grit/ I ended up taking Ada my Australorp hybrid to the vets for her soft shelled eggs. She's on 200mg of...

Mabel laid me a PERFECT egg today, so beautiful. Diet must've been off, she was getting into the calcium grit a bit too much. So glad, she's a fantastic egg layer and all round amazing chicken.

Anniebee, I was using the vaseline everyday for several days. Downside is its so greasy and gets into feathers something chronic. My Esme is very dirty, even after a bath, but she feels better so that's the main thing.

Fortunately Ezzie isn't laying atm, and her legs have improved. A lot of dead scales came off yesterday, and she's standing on her feet more. So hooray. I might exnay the pestene, unless I get another outbreak. Mabel my araucana layed an egg today that was totally coated in powder. Her last...

Thank you :) Hope your pest problems clear up soon too, before it starts to heat up again. Sucks winter's nearly over now.

Coconut oil is good too if you ever need to massage the crop if you have impaction concerns, and it also has nutritional benefits. I had no probs getting Annabelle to eat some a while ago, she rather enjoyed it. But yes, I think it's going to take some time for my Esme's feet to get back to...

I forgot about using vicks, might mix it up, alternate with the vaseline.

Thanks Luckysmum. Annabelle is all well, her checkup went great, all better. Vet advised me on Ada, I'll monitor her eggs for a while, and take note of any soft shelled eggs, and go from there. Currently my pekin Esmé has bad scaly leg, poor bubba. I treated her for it a while back but it...

I use avi-calcium soluble calcium, have used calivet in the past though. Whatever's in stock on planetpoultry.com really. Both are good. Yeh it was my araucana Mabel's first major mature moult this year, and Beatrice my belgian as well. Both were a little out of sorts, poor Mabel was just...

Fancy, you are right about her moult, this year was the first time I actually noticed Ada moulting properly. First moult was early autumn, her wings and such, then second one closer to the beginning of winter was her tail. I've not taken her to the vets yet, that was Annabelle my RIR hybrid. Ada...

Thanks Luckysmum. I think for now I might monitor Ada for now and see how her eggs go. If she shows other symptoms then I'll take her to the vet, but I'm really thinking for her it might be the beginning of her winding down. I'll monitor her diet and calcium intake. See, my concern stems...

Satay, nah Ada moulted twice this autumn actually, and has such wonderful new feathers now. Once she started laying again, she's been good thus far, though eggs until now have been a little thinner, smooth shell though with a rough bottom. Then Tuesday, in the coop I found a yolk and a small...

Hey guys, been a while. Hope all is well :) I had a quick question, is two and a half a bit early for a hybrid layer to start slowing down, nearing the end of their laying cycle or about average?

What an adorable little quartet! Your faverolle looks so beautiful and fluffy, they're such a wonderful breed.

Thank you! She is, pet quality, but adorable none the less. I think she must have some mille fleur parentage somewhere, hence the pattern and colour. They are good little layers aren't they? I'd read a lot about how they weren't before I got her, but in reality she's been amazing. Bea lays...

I have a yard full of feathers! Mabel my araucana has started moulting. She's seemed a bit quiet for a few days, stopped laying. I put it down to the seasons changing, then since Tuesday, it's like a pillow exploded. Little fluffy grey feathers everywhere. I'm excited about it, her first mature...

Thank you Coram, that's good to know. I did file the bump down a bit and then dabbed sani-chick (a poultry disinfectant, basically iodine) on her beak, and a small boo boo she had on her cheek. She's been fine. Also, if anyone needs to file a chicken beak, I recommend Scholl's electronic nail...
