Hello folks.
I haven't been around for ages, because life got busy. And then chickens got busy. My gorgeous Rooster, Wellington, became a violent bully. At home, with me? He was fine. My husband? He attacked. My daughter, he attacked. THEN he attacked the toddler next door! Then he...
Hello folks!
The drought has broken, Ivan the Terrible (Rooster), who turned out to be a silkie hen who just was the male partridge colour (? I have no idea, but she is that bright, rich orange with HACKLES) laid an egg.
So did the other silkie hen!
My big egg machines refuse to, so I'm...
I'm a complete beginner by comparison, but I thought one of the big problems with grass was that in some chickens consumption could lead to impacted crop issues? Perhaps if it's chopped up into tiny ( >1 cm) amounts to keep her eating, if it's the only thing she can tolerate?
Well, it's a little complex. Neighbour-dude is the one who isn't really dealing with rural life very well - he's partnered with a lady who is renting the house very cheaply from her mum, and I really get the feeling from him that he'd prefer to not have to have any animals at all around him but...
Have some photos showing rooster dignity:
He sat in there while she pushed him for a while.
I'm reasonably sure most children use puppies for the whole 'pretending I have a baby' thing!
In other news, I have to look into a no-crow collar - we live in a rural area, but the neighbour...
Oh, there's a few!
Google for 'Tornado in a Bottle', which can look pretty cool if you add some glitter in.
Or, if you have the right supplies, try a Fire Tornado, certain to get you the most cool points ever.
You could show a water cycle as well - either doing it through taping a plastic...
Weather nerd, on!
The tropical Pacific is in the early stages of El Niño. El Niño is often associated with below-average winter and spring rainfall over eastern Australia, and above-average daytime temperatures over the southern half of the country. However, the current May to July outlook...
Phew, cold weather kills me.
Little to update on the Owlhome front save that I have 13 fully grown chickens, and one rooster - Ivan the Terrible turned out to be Ivan the Terrible Rooster because he is a HEN.
Aside from that, holy cow, I've never even had one measley egg from these slackers...
I can't extend light as I have no power to their current coop - we will have it in the new coop, but the current one is a long way from the house and there's just zero light - they're not even getting street light. Carrying water down there is a PITA! By linking extension cables I can get a...
Not yet! I've been a bit quiet recently (my 3.5 year old human is going through a growth spurt, house has issues, so chicken stuff has had to go on the back burner).
It's Barastoc golden yolk layer feed - I was getting them the fancy shmancy all organic layer freerange feed from another...
Plus, there's the kid-safe nailpolish (non-toxic) too.
If. Uh. You really wanted to!
You know, I have some kid-safe nailpolish at home. But how on earth would anyone get them to sit still while it was drying?
Well, the chicken coop has to go on hold, which is pretty sad for a couple of the chooks who refuse to roost with the others and so insist on sleeping on top of the shed - even in the rain. I don't dare lock them in, because they're lowest in the flock and they'll be bullied. The new coop is...
Maybe mine are moulting then, hmm.
Going to attempt to make them feel awful to make them do their jobs: Chicken Shaming.
Ivan the Terrible (Rooster):
Tries to nurse from other rooster, is not a mammal. Cuddles random objects. Renamed by visitors to 'Ivan the terrible rooster.'
Flavia...
Can chickens moult that early? There are a tonne of feathers everywhere, but no bald patches anywhere...they're all about 20-24 weeks (some maybe 26). I am used to those feathers drifting all over the place, but I thought that was because I had thirteen chickens!
